National Reconciliation Week in Australia takes place from 27 May to 3 June, with this year’s theme, “All In,” calling for a deeper commitment to reconciliation.

In this blog, Reconciliation Action Plan Facilitator and artist Cassandra Gibbs reflects on reconciliation as more than a slogan or symbolic gesture. It is a call to truth-telling, listening, learning, justice, healing and shared responsibility.

The article also offers practical ways to be “All In”, from learning whose Country you live, work or gather on, to challenging racism, supporting Aboriginal-led organisations and creating space for Aboriginal voices to lead.

National Reconciliation Week takes place in Australia from 27 May to 3 June. A a time to learn about shared histories, cultures and achievements, and to consider what reconciliation requires in practice.

Our feature, A Focus on Aboriginal Australia, explores Aboriginal history, culture and identity, as well as the impacts of colonisation, dispossession, the Stolen Generations, Native Title and continuing struggles for rights and recognition.

For teachers, educators and learners, this resource offers a starting point for discussion on Indigenous rights, historical justice, inequality and global citizenship.

On the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, DevelopmentEducation.ie is highlighting Q***r Voices / Glórtha Aiteacha — a Global Citizenship Education resource from ShoutOut focused on LGBTQ+ identities, equality, inclusion and human rights.

The resource supports post-primary students, educators and youth workers in exploring themes of identity, belonging, representation, discrimination and allyship through creative and participatory learning approaches.

Today is an important reminder of the need to challenge prejudice, promote inclusion and create educational spaces where all voices are respected and valued.

Over 170 schools took part in this year’s Concern Worldwide all-island debate, discussing topics ranging from fast fashion and Artificial Intelligence to the virtues (or otherwise) of Western democracy.

Congratulations to Ursuline Secondary School, this year’s champions, for successfully proposing the motion: “It’s time to increase international aid, not walk away from it.”

We are delighted to see initiatives like the Concern Debate continuing to encourage discussion, critical learning and global citizenship among young people across Ireland.

We were delighted to hear DevelopmentEducation.ie recognised during the Joint Committee on Education and Youth discussion, where Irish Development Education Association - IDEA members highlighted the platform as a digital repository supporting critical learning and Global Citizenship Education in Ireland.

At a time when misinformation, inequality and global challenges continue to shape our world, access to educational resources that encourage critical thinking, dialogue and action has never been more important.

A sincere thank you to IDEA and everyone working to strengthen Development Education and Global Citizenship Education across Ireland.

Today, March 8, we mark International Women’s Day — a time to celebrate the achievements of women and reflect on their vital role in the ongoing struggle for justice and human rights.

There are reasons to be hopeful. According to UN Women:
- More girls are completing school
- Women are gaining seats in parliament
- In the last five years, more than 100 countries have removed discriminatory laws

UN Women’s Gender Snapshot 2025 highlights six game-changing areas for progress: digital inclusion, freedom from poverty, safety from violence, equality in decision-making, peace and security, and climate justice.

But what does this mean in everyday life? What can each of us do to challenge the inequality and discrimination women continue to face?

We can:
1. Have difficult conversations and speak up against sexism, whether blatant or casual
2. Listen to diverse women’s voices, especially those from marginalised and minority communities
3. Educate ourselves and others, and stay open to learning
4. Promote equality and safety, including fair pay and economic opportunity
5. Engage others, especially men and boys, and hold those in power accountable

Progress happens through everyday action. This International Women’s Day, let’s reflect, learn and act for a more equal world.
