SERVE is a development and volunteering organisation committed to tackling poverty in the majority world.

We strive to do this by working in solidarity, service and partnership with marginalised and oppressed communities, empowering them to tackle the root causes of poverty and injustice. SERVE focuses specifically on programmes and projects that help communities enhance the lives of children and young people and recognises that gender equality is pivotal to achieving justice, equality and sustainable development.

SERVE and Young Africa are recruiting 10–12 volunteers for a 4-week skills-based volunteering programme in Mozambique in summer 2027.

We’re looking for people who can bring useful professional or practical experience, particularly in:
• Engineering • Horticulture • Agriculture and farming • Construction

This opportunity is open to established professionals, retired experts and people at the beginning of their careers.

Volunteers will work alongside Young Africa’s local teams, sharing knowledge and supporting local training programmes and community development initiatives.

The SERVE team were saddened to learn of the passing of John Duggan, father of former SERVE volunteer Francis Duggan.
Francis volunteered with SERVE in both the Philippines and Brazil and has been a valued part of the SERVE community over the years.
We extend our sincere sympathies to Francis and his family at this sad time.

Next Steps 2026 💛

Last week, SERVE volunteers, interns, alumni, board members and staff gathered in Rosscarbery for our annual Next Steps Weekend, bringing together people from across our 2026 programmes to reflect, reconnect and celebrate the year.

The weekend marked the end of a busy year across SERVE’s Volunteer Programmes, which included 17 Immersion Volunteers, 15 overseas volunteers, four three-month internships, 15 alumni volunteers actively involved and four new SERVE@home volunteers, alongside SERVE’s volunteer Board of Directors.

Every group was represented across the weekend, with a small number also joining online.

Through workshops, discussions and volunteer presentations, participants looked back on their placements and projects, shared their experiences and reflected on how they can continue their commitment to global citizenship and social justice beyond the programme.

There was also plenty of time to catch up, celebrate and enjoy being together.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us, and to Celtic Ross Hotel, Nolan’s Pub and Celtic Cottages for their continued hospitality and support. Rosscarbery has become a real part of the tradition of our Debrief, Evaluation and Celebration Weekend, and we’re very grateful for the welcome each year.

It was a fitting way to close out the 2026 programmes and celebrate everything achieved together.

Yesterday, we witnessed the power of young people’s voices as participants from Ireland, Zambia and the Philippines came together for a Global North-South Virtual Exchange focused on disability inclusion, social justice and solidarity.

Through artwork, storytelling and personal reflection, the group shared experiences across countries and explored themes of dignity, inclusion and belonging.

A big thank you to everyone who took part, shared openly, listened and contributed to the discussion. It was a really positive session and a great example of what can happen when young people are given the space to learn from one another.

The creative work from the exchange will also form part of SERVE’s Digital Gallery, helping to keep the conversation going beyond the workshop.

A huge thank you to the parishioners of Ballyfermot for their incredible generosity at last week’s Flip Flop Appeal collection, where €2,043.05 was raised 💛

A special shoutout as well to Mark Coomey and Radhika Deorukhkar for giving their time and helping out with the collection.

We’re very grateful to everyone who donated, stopped to chat and supported SERVE during the collection.

A good day at the University of Galway ALIVE Volunteer Fair 💛

Nicola and Brendan spent the day chatting with students about SERVE, volunteering opportunities and different ways to get involved.

It was also lovely to have Mia, who’ll be joining SERVE as an intern from January, pop by to help out ✨

A brilliant update from St. Patrick’s Secondary School in Mazanuka, Zambia 🇿🇲

Students recently harvested bananas from the school’s own plantation, which was established with support from SERVE.

The plantation is now providing fresh food for students while also giving them practical experience in growing and caring for crops.

It is great to see something planted as a small school project now being used and enjoyed by the students themselves.

Well done to the students and staff at St. Patrick’s on the harvest 💛
