SERVE

SERVE SERVE is a development and volunteering organisation committed to tackling poverty in the majority world.

We strive to do this by working in solidarity, service and partnership with marginalised and oppressed communities, empowering them to tackle the root causes of poverty and injustice. SERVE focuses specifically on programmes and projects that help communities enhance the lives of children and young people and recognises that gender equality is pivotal to achieving justice, equality and sustainable development.

A big update on the sensory garden 🌱

Our volunteer team have laid sand and stone for the pathway, painted more of the surrounding fences and worked on several other features that will be used throughout the garden.

A huge thank you to everyone who gave their time and energy on the day, including Dermot Kelly, who has supported SERVE through fundraising on several occasions over the years.

Inês wanted more control over her work and her income.

After receiving a SERVE-supported scholarship to study Cosmetology and Beauty Culture at Young Africa Mozambique, she opened a salon of her own.

Today, she works for herself, building her client base through word of mouth, Facebook and WhatsApp, and providing hair and beauty services for weddings, graduations and other occasions.

The business is still growing, but Inês is building something that is hers.

A huge congratulations to the 161 young people who graduated in Cowdray Park, Bulawayo on 23 July 🎓

Through the Skills for Youth Resilience Programme Outreach Training Project with Young Africa Zimbabwe, students completed training across five trades: Beauty Therapy, Catering, Cutting and Design, Motor Vehicle Mechanics and Solar Installation.

These are the moments the programme is built for. Young people gaining practical skills, opening up new opportunities and taking the next step towards work, income and greater independence.

Well done to everyone involved 💛

Today is International Youth Day 🌍

This year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations”, reminds us that young people may face very different challenges, but they share the same hopes for opportunity, dignity and a fairer future.

Through SERVE’s youth programmes and volunteering initiatives, young people are supported to build skills, grow in confidence and take meaningful action in their communities.

This also connects closely with SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities. When young people are included, supported and given opportunities to lead, we move closer to a more just and equal world.

The SERVE team were sad to learn of the recent death of Denise McCloskey, Mother of former SERVE volunteer and leader Michael McCloskey who supported SERVE programmes in the Philippines, South Africa and Mozambique.

From all at SERVE, we extend our prayerful support to Michael and his sister Deirdre at this tender time.

May Denise flourish in eternal love.

Progress on our sensory garden 🌱

Over the past few weeks, work has begun on preparing the garden space at Scala, including digging out the pathway and painting the surrounding fence with children from the Scala Summer Camp.

Today, a group of volunteers are coming together for a bigger build day, helping move the project into its next stage.

The garden is a collaboration between SERVE and Scala, supported by the European Solidarity Corps, and will become an inclusive outdoor space focused on accessibility, wellbeing and community.

More updates to come as the garden takes shape 💛
