Reminder our walk takes place tomorrow. We would love for people to join us

Next Sunday 23rd of August our volunteers will do a sponsored walk to raise funds for Birr Tidy Towns. Sponsorship cards are in shops throughout the town. We would love everyone to join us in our walk.

Birr Tidy Towns hosted a Heritage Week event led by Brian Kennedy who detailed the significance of the 3rd earl of Rosse and the maker of the statue JH Foley in the wider context of the development of John’s Place.

We are working with Offaly County Council to progress conservation of this nationally important statue and with Heritage Council Community Funding in 2026 commissioned a report by experts Consarc.

We hope that this will lead to conservation works in the near future. In addition to our members and other Heritage Week guests we were delighted to welcome Lisa Shortall from the Heritage Council to the tour too.

Meeting at John's Hall, John's Place, Birr, historian Brian Kennedy will lead a walking tour of John's Place detailing the street's evolution, features of note and the key location of the statue of the 3rd Earl of Rosse.
Birr Tidy Towns are currently working with Consarc Consultants on a report with recommendations for the care of this monument and have received a Heritage Council Community Grant in 2026.

Public Car Park available on Wilmer Road, on street parking and Cornmarket Car Park.

Heritage Week starts this Saturday with plenty of choice!

One of the first events is 'From Benchmarks to Jostle Stones to Postboxes - Hidden Secrets of Birr Walking tour' led by Richard Jack and hosted by Birr Historical Society. Leaving Emmet Square at 11am for a 2 hour meander!

Meg & The Hennessy’s win the Birr Tidy Towns
Car Treasure Hunt by a whisker

The Annual Tom O’Reilly Memorial Vintage Week Car Treasure Hunt took place on Monday 3rd August based in Dooly’s Hotel Birr.

This year’s route started in Emmet Square then on to through Syngefield, Whiteford, Miletree, Cree, Castletown, Dromoyle, Ballygaddy, Aghancon, Longford & Derrykeel. Clues were funny, challenging and entertaining.

A record entry of 108 cars took part. Competition was fierce and eventually Meg Delaney & the Hennessys emerged a popular winners on 685 Marks. Runner Up went to Fiona Delaney & The Winners on 680 marks, a mere 5 Marks from the overall win. 3rd Overall went to Niall Sullivan from Birr on 640 Marks and Joint 4th Overall went to Scott Shaw and John Giverin on 635 Marks.

As ever the Birr Tidy Towns Committee would to thank the residents along the route for their patience and understanding and Dooly’s Hotel for a magnificent HQ. A very special thanks to the organising team that organised a splendid evenings entertainment.
