Did you know that a bogs only source of water is rainfall? Water is the lifeline of a peatland habitat, the IPCC often refer to it as the 'blood' of a bog. Peatlands store 90% water absorbed by the water storing Sphagnum mosses that should carpet the peatland surface. So as Irelands wetter autumn weather arrives and we say farewell to the warm dry summer days of the past few months Irish peatlands have been waiting for this rainfall and welcome it!

The IPCC came across a Raft Spider (Dolomedes fimbriatus) earlier this week at the Bog of Allen Nature Centre. Did you know that this is Ireland’s largest spider? The female body length can reach 22mm while the male can grow to 15mm! As its name suggests this spider is semi-aqautic and you will find the adults close to wetland areas including bog pools. Their diet consists of freshwater invertebrates. The raft spider can feel the vibrations of invertebrates in the water and when the time is right will grab their prey such as a water beetle or dragonfly nymph. To avoid predation from birds the raft spider can dive underwater and can remain there for a number of minutes. IPCC hope you observe a Raft Spider on your next bogland visit as one might just be waiting patiently at the edge of a bog pool for its next tasty meal.

A hedge can do a lot more than just mark a boundary.
