The Schoolbooks Scheme has removed a major back-to-school cost for families โ€” but that does not mean every item on a school list is automatically covered.

๐—”๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ถ๐—บ๐—ฎ๐—ฟ๐˜† ๐—ฎ๐—ป๐—ฑ ๐˜€๐—ฝ๐—ฒ๐—ฐ๐—ถ๐—ฎ๐—น-๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น ๐—น๐—ฒ๐˜ƒ๐—ฒ๐—น, ๐˜€๐—ฐ๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ผ๐—น๐˜€ ๐—บ๐˜‚๐˜€๐˜ ๐—ฝ๐—ฟ๐—ผ๐˜ƒ๐—ถ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ:

โœ… Workbooks
โœ… Copybooks

If funding remains, schools may also provide items such as pens, pencils, dictionaries, mathematical sets or school journals. Schools must tell parents clearly what they will and will not provide. Parents should not be charged a deposit to take part in the Primary Schoolbooks Scheme.

โœ… Textbooks, including eBooks
โœ… Workbooks
โœ… Novels and plays required for subjects
โœ… Past examination papers where needed
โœ… A school journal, where the school uses one
โœ… Core classroom resources specified by the school

A post-primary school may request a refundable deposit of up to โ‚ฌ50, but it must explain which items the deposit covers and which items must be returned.

๐Ÿ’ป Tablets, laptops and other digital devices
๐ŸšŒ School trips and optional activities
๐ŸŠ Swimming lessons and certain school-based activities
๐Ÿ›ก๏ธ Insurance
๐Ÿ“ Aptitude tests and, at post-primary level, mock examinations
โœ๏ธ Additional classroom supplies that the school has not chosen to provide

Schools may request payment for genuine direct costs or optional extras outside the scheme. They may also seek a voluntary contribution, but it cannot be compulsory or used as a condition for providing your child with the books and resources covered by the scheme.

๐Ÿ”Ž Check whether the school list marks each item as provided by the school or to be purchased by parents

โ“ Ask the school to explain any charge that is unclear

๐Ÿ“š Remember that most schoolbooks are being loaned to pupils and should be looked after and returned when requested

Parents should not be asked to contribute towards schoolbooks or classroom resources that are covered by the scheme.

Hosted by the West Cork Migrant Workers Network, this community event takes place on Saturday, 8th August at Bandon AFC from 1:30pm.

Friendly soccer tournament, children's games and activities, food, and information stands from local community organisations.
