Last week, we were delighted to welcome participants of the Let’s Chat Medicine Workshop, delivered in partnership with Systems Biology Ireland and University College Dublin, for the third and final workshop in our three-year collaboration.

Over several days, 40 participants came together to explore how science and art can be combined in innovative ways to make personalised medicine more accessible and easier for young people to understand. Building on the foundations laid in previous workshops, the group collaborated, created and shared ideas that will help bring complex healthcare topics to life for future audiences.

The workshop wasn’t all work, though. Participants also had the opportunity to experience Barretstown’s unique environment, take part in camp activities and enjoy the benefits of therapeutic recreation alongside their creative and scientific sessions.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who took part and brought such energy, curiosity and creativity to the workshop.

An infant’s heart is only as big as a walnut. Holly’s was half that.

Two open heart surgeries carried Holly to the age of two, before she began to black out.

Holly was in end stage heart failure. She was no longer a candidate for the third, crucial heart surgery she’d need to survive.

There was one option left. They would need to live in hospital, while Holly waited on a heart transplant list.

When all was said and done, they would wait three years. Three birthdays living in hospital.

Holly’s heart transplant took place at age 5.

After everything they’d been through, Holly’s family found something they didn’t realise they needed at Barretstown: a chance to have fun together, make memories, and just be a family.

It’s a gift you can help provide for more families this summer.

Whether you donate €5, €50, €500, or any amount that feels right to you, your support helps families step away from the challenges of illness and spend precious time together, creating memories that last long after camp ends.

Spring at Barretstown, through a few unseen moments 💚

Looking back on the joy, connection and magic that made the season so special.

“An infant’s heart is only as big as a walnut. Holly’s was half that. And she wasn’t the lovely pink of a newborn baby. Our baby was grey.” — Jessica, Holly’s Mam

Within days of her birth, Holly’s family were told she needed open-heart surgery to survive.

She was tiny. Vulnerable. Tube-fed. At high risk of infection. Family life became careful, restricted, and filled with fear.

Then came Barretstown.

For Holly, it became a place where she didn’t have to worry that she wasn’t fast enough or strong enough. A place where she could simply be Holly.

This summer, your donation can help give another child affected by serious illness that same gift of time, joy, and belonging.

Please donate today and help a family like Holly’s via the link here https://barretstown.org/support/donate/

Last week, we hosted a special mid-week camp at Barretstown with support from Jack and Jill Children's Foundation . Children, parents, and siblings participated in a range of activities, creating magical memories together that will last a lifetime 🧡

Our therapeutic camps and programmes give children and families affected by serious illness the chance to rebuild confidence, independence, and self-esteem in a safe and supportive environment.

Huge thanks to Jack and Jill for making this special experience possible.

Meet Holly

Holly was born with half a heart.

To see her today, you might never imagine the open-heart surgeries she had before the age of 3... or the heart transplant she went through at age 5.

But it’s because of friends like you that Holly has a place where her heart can belong. A place where she doesn’t have to worry that she isn’t fast enough or strong enough or that she doesn’t fit in.

At Barretstown she can just be Holly, filled with her own confidence and light. It’s a gift her family hopes with all their hearts you could give to a child with serious illness today – through your donation for the gift of time at Barretstown.

Because every sick child deserves the magic of camp.
