BE4ES Ballymore Eustace for Environmental Sustainability

BE4ES Ballymore Eustace for Environmental Sustainability Ballymore Eustace Environmental Group (BE4ES) aims to provide info on environmental sustainability 🌿

BE4ES is a resource through which the local community can both access and input information relating to the Environment and Sustainability locally and globally. BE4ES will support local organisations, schools and businesses in their efforts to be environmentally sustainable. Members of the local community are encouraged to get involved and submit information that would be useful to the community i

n general on these topics. BE4ES will keep the community informed about 2 important current projects in Ballymore Eustace namely the Biodiversity Action Plan (BAP) and the Sustainability Energy Community (SEC). BE4ES will provide general and local information on Climate Change and Climate Action, Environmental Sustainability, Waste Reduction, Reuse, Recycling, Repair, Anti-litter campaigns and Home Composting. BE4ES will also facilitate the setting up of Recycling initiatives, and provide information through talks/webinars/posts on what facilities are available in the Kildare County Council area for Recycling. BE4ES will facilitate seed/plant/produce swaps as the opportunity arises. Connections with other similar groups locally, regionally and nationally will be developed to prevent duplication of ideas and effort.

The River Liffey Himalayan Balsam Control Project is now in its sixth year. Great progress has been made at the upstream extent of the infestation at Ballymore Eustace village and surrounds. Project leads and local community members wish to keep up the positive momentum and move to support new control efforts further downstream in 2026. As Kilcullen are the next community downstream, here will be an information meeting on Monday the 22nd of June followed by 2 FREE Invasive Species Workshops on Wednesday 24th and Thursday 25th. This coincides with Invasive Species Week (22nd-28th June). More info @ invasives.ie

As we’ve posted in May we received another €19,000 from LAWPRO to continue to tackle HB downstream from the village this summer. The work carried out by contractors funded by a CWDF grant from LAWPRO in 2025, on the lands downstream, appears to have worked well. New methods were trialed which will contribute to the knowledge of how best to tackle this Invasive Alien Species (IAS) which is rampant throughout the whole country. There are a few plants popping up on the river banks along the river at the village so our volunteers will be out at the end of the month to tackle what’s there. The campaign has been a great success and it’s great to be able to share our experiences with other communities as they have with us.

These events are not run by BEE Group.

We would like to extend our heartiest congratulations to Scoil Mhuire for being awarded the An Taisce Green Flag for Global Citizenship Energy.

The students did research projects on the global impact of fast fashion and technology. They also researched how the classroom impacts energy use. They ran a Global Awareness week in February as part of their research.

This led to the school implementing reminders on all the light switches in the school and the launch of a recycling and awareness programme on how to divide waste.

The school also takes part in litter picking, tree planting and a glasses/sunglasses recycling programmes.

Brilliant work!

School Biodiversity Walk
On the morning of Friday 22nd May BEE Group members Siobhan Murphy and Maria O’Neill along with their teacher Ms Catherine Oates, took the 6th Class from Scoil Mhuire, on a nature walk along the river. With excellent guidance from Siobhan the pupils got thoroughly engaged producing fabulous descriptions and drawings of the many trees, plants, birds, and insects they observed as they walked the river bank. Some small Himalayan Balsam seedlings appeared so we could demonstrate how not everything belongs and how we control this particular Invasive Alien Species. The class then did up a summary of their observations later that day.

They are a great group of young people, very happy to look and learn and we wish them every success and thank them for their attention and enthuasism. The future is bright for the Natural World in their care. Thanks also their equally enthusiastic teacher Ms Catherine Oates and Scoil Mhuire for asking us to do this event particularly appropriate as this is National Biodiversity Week.
