DISPUTE MUST BE SETTLED

A concerned Killarney councillor has said it is a matter of “critical urgency” that the Governments sits down with representatives from the National Ambulance Services tobput a deal in place that will work for everyone.
Cllr John O’Donoghue met with the ambulance service staff on strike in Killarney in Tuesday and he joined them on the picket line as they brought their long-running campaign for better pay and conditions to a head.
“It was very clear from speaking to them that there are very many serious issues facing the service in our country,” Cllr O’Donoghue said.
“This is especially the case in a large rural county like Kerry which is hugely under resourced at the best of times,” he added.
Cllr O’Donoghue said providing adequate working conditions would at least help alleviate the huge staff shortages and improve retention of staff when they do qualify.

MAYOR JOINS PICKET LINE
The Mayor of Killarney joined the picket line this Tuesday in support of the National Ambulance Service 24-hour strike as a festering dispute over pay and conditions escalates.
Cllr Martin Grady is very familiar with the difficulties being experienced by the paramedics as he too works in the emergency services in his capacity as a firefighter in Killarney.
The HSE, meanwhile, has warned it is very concerned about the impact of the industrial action.
People were advised before today’s strike action that they might need to make their own way to emergency departments over the course of the 24-hour stoppage.
From 8am, a picket was placed at the ambulance dispatch centre off the Killarney bypass road.
Unions have warned that if the dispute is not resolved, there will be a 48-hour stoppage beginning on May 19 and a 72-hour stoppage starting on May 26.
