Twin Towns Heritage Trail Officially Launched

The rich history of Ballybofey and Stranorlar was celebrated on Monday
evening with the official launch of the new Twin Towns Heritage Trail,
marking the completion of an exciting community project that brings
together local heritage and tourism.

Hosted at The Pound, Stranorlar, the launch was attended by local
residents, community groups, project partners and invited guests, who
gathered to celebrate the unveiling of the new 4.8km self-guided
walking trail featuring 20 heritage sites across the Twin Towns.

Developed by BASICC and Ballybofey & Stranorlar Tidy Towns supported
by Donegal County Council, and local businesses including Jackson's
Hotel, Villa Rose Hotel, SuperValu and Go Visit Donegal, the project
showcases the rich history, culture and architecture of Ballybofey and
Stranorlar while encouraging people to explore the area on foot.

The free self-guided walking trail can be accessed using a smartphone
by scanning QR codes located at each heritage site. Visitors can also
pick up printed trail leaflets from participating local businesses or
explore the trail online at www.heritagetrailtwintowns.ie, where each
stop is brought to life with historical information, archive
photographs and local stories.

Speaking at the launch, Clr Patrick McGowan (Cathaoirleach of the
Lifford–Stranorlar Municipal District), said:"The Heritage Trail is a
wonderful example of what can be achieved through partnership and
community collaboration. It celebrates the stories that have shaped
the Twin Towns while creating a lasting resource for residents,
schools and visitors. We hope people of all ages will enjoy
discovering the heritage on their own doorstep."

Guests had the opportunity to explore the trail, learn more about the
historical research behind the project and experience the new digital
resources before enjoying refreshments at The Base.

The trail features 20 significant heritage locations, including
Drumboe Castle, The Pound, Isaac Butt's Grave and many other
landmarks that tell the story of the Twin Towns' development over the
centuries.

BASICC and Ballybofey & Stranorlar Tidy Towns thanked everyone who
contributed to the project, including project partners, local
businesses, volunteers, researchers and the wider community whose
support helped make the Heritage Trail a reality.

HERITAGE TRAIL LAUNCH

New Twin Towns Heritage Trail Brings Local History to Life

The rich history and unique character of Ballybofey and Stranorlar are set to be celebrated with the launch of the new Twin Towns Heritage Trail, offering residents and visitors an exciting opportunity to discover the area's fascinating past.

The official launch will take place on Monday, July 6, at 6.30pm at The Pound, Stranorlar, with everyone warmly invited to attend.

Developed by BASICC in partnership with Ballybofey & Stranorlar Tidy Towns, the new 4.8km self-guided walking trail connects 20 heritage sites across the Twin Towns, showcasing the area's rich history, culture and architectural heritage.

The free trail is easily accessible using a smartphone by scanning QR codes installed at each heritage location. Visitors can also collect printed trail leaflets from participating local businesses or explore the route online at www.heritagetrailtwintowns.ie, where every stop is brought to life through historical information, archive photographs and captivating local stories.

Created to preserve and celebrate the shared heritage of Ballybofey and Stranorlar, the trail encourages people to explore the towns on foot while discovering the stories behind many of their best-known landmarks. Highlights along the route include Drumboe Castle, The Pound, Isaac Butt's grave and many other significant sites that have helped shape the development of the Twin Towns over the years.

Basicc hope the project will inspire both local people and visitors to learn more about the area's rich heritage while enjoying everything the Twin Towns have to offer.

"The Heritage Trail is a wonderful way to celebrate the unique history of our community. We hope it will encourage both local people and visitors to explore the Twin Towns, learn something new about our shared heritage, and enjoy everything the area has to offer," the organisers said.

The initiative has been made possible through the support of Donegal County Council, Jackson's Hotel, Villa Rose Hotel, SuperValu and Go Visit Donegal. Their backing highlights the positive impact that can be achieved when local authorities, businesses and community organisations work together to celebrate heritage, boost tourism and support the local economy.

Following the official launch at The Pound, refreshments will be served at The Base, providing an opportunity for the community to come together and mark the beginning of an exciting new chapter in celebrating the history of Ballybofey and Stranorlar.

Everyone is welcome to attend.

It is with great disappointment that we have to announce the cancellation of the event due to a lack of entries for the raft race.
Unfortunately, despite the planning, preparation, and effort that has gone into organising the day, there are not enough competitors to make the event viable. As a result, the entire event — including the children’s section — will now be cancelled.
Thank you for your understanding, and we apologise for the disappointment caused.

🚨 Important update regarding Summer Splash 🚨

As of right now, the Summer Splash event will not be going ahead UNLESS we receive more entries for the raft race.

We need more registrations before 5pm tomorrow evening — if numbers don’t improve by then, unfortunately the event (including the children’s event) will have to be cancelled.

Come on, community! ❤️ You’ve said there’s nothing to do locally — well, here’s your chance to support something fun for everyone. We need your help to make this happen!

Please get your entries in and spread the word. Let’s make Summer Splash happen! 🌊☀️
