It’s a trend to talk about what you were up to in 2016, well here’s how our den was when we moved in! Cold, bare but full of potential! Ten years of development and we are still working to make it better and better for young people in the community! 🔨 🪚

Let’s take a throw back to a decade ago! In 2016 the newly re-opened Group had activities including a joint Beaver and Cub hike in Larch Hill, a trip to Dún Laoghaire lifeboat, our first annual walk of the Great South Wall (a highlight of every Cub Scout year), and Cub sailing in Malahide. Also a huge clean of the den and grounds was completed.

In July 2016 the Group recieved its charter from Scouting Ireland, a recognition that 1st Port and Sea Scouting in Ringsend was back.

How 10 years has just flown by!

The history of 1st Port intersects with the complex history of Ireland in the early twentieth century a number of times. One of those touch points is the Great War.

The Scouter magazine of December 1932 says that 35 boys and men from 1st Port joined up, “with 14 of the lads called to higher service”. Records to support this are patchy and inconsistent but it is certainly the case that young Irish Scouts participated in the war effort. The war horrified Baden Powell, who became even more committed to his cause, creating the biggest movement for peace the world has ever seen, the world fellowship of Scouting and Guiding.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of the armistice, let’s remember all the Scouts and Guides who were killed in the Great War, including:

Private Fred Burrows - Royal Dublin Fusiliers. Late boatman 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scouts. Killed in action, November 13th, 1916.

Trooper Philip de Ruyter - South Irish Horse. Late Patrol Leader 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scouts. Died of wounds, December 13th, 1917.

Bernard Ferries - Carpenters' Crew, HMS Vanguard. Late Assistant Scoutmaster 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scouts. Killed by explosion, July 9th 1917.

Seaman Henry Mills - Late Boatman 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scouts. Killed on HMS Indefatigable on the first day of the Battle of Jutland, 31 May 1916, aged just 17.

Jamboree 2028 is coming and we need someone to lead it.

Scouting Ireland has produced amazing Jamborees before and we will do so again. It's high time that the young people of this generation get to see what magic can happen when Irish scouts gather.

If you, or anyone you know, would be a suitable candidate please consider applying.
