A lovely new little book now in stock in the shop from Ballinrobe legend Averil Staunton. 📖

Pick up a copy of “A Short History of Ballinrobe, Co. Mayo” for just €8.95, it would make a beautiful gift. 📚

We’re all about supporting local at Murphy’s. 👏🏼

Congrats Averil. 🥂

Oscar Wilde was profoundly affected by the loss of his sister Isola in their childhood and wrote the now famous poem ‘Requiescat’ in her memory. He carried a lock of her hair in a decorated envelope until the end of his life. According to Wilde, Isola lit up his family’s lives like “a golden ray of sunshine dancing about our home.” ☀️

Tread lightly, she is near
Under the snow,
Speak gently, she can hear
The daisies grow.

All her bright golden hair
Tarnished with rust,
She that was young and fair
Fallen to dust.

Lily-like, white as snow,
She hardly knew
She was a woman, so
Sweetly she grew.

Coffin-board, heavy stone,
Lie on her breast,
I vex my heart alone,
She is at rest.

Peace, peace, she cannot hear
Lyre or sonnet,
All my life's buried here,
Heap earth upon it.
