We were delighted to add our great friend Eugene O’Malley to our roll of honorary life members at our AGM.
Eugene has been a stalwart of Ballinrobe Musical Society for the guts of four decades.
Since making his debut in the early 1980s, Eugene has been part of over 30 Ballinrobe shows, powering our chorus with his booming bass voice alongside many other great men, some of whom have sadly gone to their eternal reward.
Eugene is exactly the kind of man any society would love to have.
As well as being a fine singer, he is affable, good-humoured, unfailingly reliable, and has done as much for the society off-stage as he has on stage. Because no matter what he is asked to do, Eugene does it with a heart and half, always with the best interests of the society.
Over the years, he has poured thousands of cups of tea and coffee from his trusty Burko boiler, which never failed to appear at rehearsals in the week leading up to ‘the show’.
Every year without fail, Eugene’s jeep and trailer are on site good and early to draw the chairs from the school to the racecourse before and after the show. At this stage, you don't even need to ask him – because you know it will be done!
A member of our committee for a number of years, most recently in 2023, Eugene is a card-carrying member of a group of BMS stalwarts affectionately known as ‘One Direction’.
Over the years, Eugene enjoyed manys a good post-show sing-song with his great friends Noel ‘Noeleen’ Ansbro (RIP), Mick Sweeney and Gerry Hughes. Indeed, nobody could sing ‘The Black Hills of Dakota’ or ‘Walk Right Back’ like these guys!
Although he took a step back from the stage this year, Eugene was still suited and booted come show time, courteously ushering people to their seats at our front of house before Frozen.
He hasn’t gone away, you know. Long may that continue to be so.
Thank you, Eugene, for being such a great friend of Ballinrobe.
