Ballina Karen Community Green Garden

Volunteers meet for two hours twice a week from 6 to 8pm on Tuesday evening and from 11am to 1pm on Friday morning. We grow a huge range of flowers.

We have about 16 regular volunteers of all ages, both men and women. People can come as often as they like or just pay the occasional visit. We grow a huge range of herbs, vegetables and fruit, all the common ones and such things as grapes, peaches, yakkon, oca, artichokes. We are as organic as possible using our own compost and we make our own liquid fertiliser. We always try and use best practic

e in the interest of the environment. This year we are installing two beehives and training people in beekeeping. Entry to the garden is by the college gate and turn left before the main door. There is ample parking. In 2014 we were placed 1st in the Tidy Towns Competition under Sustainable Development and won €1,000. It is also a great social occasion as the last half hour is spent having tea, pizza, cake or whatever. We have our own cooking facilities including a hob oven and many of our members are excellent cooks. We are always on the lookout for new volunteers. No experience necessary.

Goldenrod,
Solidago is in full bloom at the moment and is an absolute treasure trove for pollinators.

Was very valuable in the past for herbal remedies.

It's a perennial plant but is quite invasive.

It's a firm favourite with florists for floral arrangements.

Lovely day yesterday in Ballina Karen Community Green Garden where we welcomed many visitors who enjoyed the sunshine and admired our wonderful array of flowers and vegetables and herbs and met our wonderful garden volunteers.

This is harvest time and we picked cauliflowers, broad beans and onions and lettuce and kale and cucumbers to share.

We were delighted to donate some flowers to Ballina Dragons to decorate the Glasgow Kennedy Centre which is the hub for the Dragon Boat regatta team registrations today and all the volunteers from many organizations who are all giving of their time to promote well being in our locality.

The flowers add a warm welcoming vibe at the GKC to all participating in the Regatta today where lovely friendships as well as flowers blossom.

Such a perfect day for the Regatta and best wishes to our friends in Ballina Dragons in the races.

A wonderful pollinator friendly plant.

Agastache or Korean mint or blue giant hyssop

Beautiful plant with gorgeous anise/liquorice scented flowers .. in bloom all summer long and great to attract a variety of pollinators and lovely for culinary uses.
