Congratulations to Milly Seaman from Bandon, who was crowned winner of the Soroptimist International Republic of Ireland National Public Speaking Competition at the historic Mansion House in Dublin.

Milly impressed judges and audience alike with her confident delivery, clarity of thought and powerful speaking ability. As part of the competition, finalists also responded to an impromptu topic, this year’s challenge was “Growing up means…” where Milly demonstrated remarkable composure and insight.

We are incredibly proud of all the talented students who took part in this inspiring national final, representing their schools and communities with confidence and passion.

Our sincere thanks to SCF Global Campus, whose support helps us continue to encourage young people to develop the skills, confidence and leadership that public speaking fosters.

Final preparations are underway in classrooms, homes, and communities across Ireland as our incredible finalists get ready for the National Final this Saturday at the Mansion House in Dublin.

Over the past number of months, these remarkable young women have dedicated time, energy, and courage to developing and sharing their voices. Reaching the national stage is an extraordinary achievement, and we are so proud of every one of them.

A heartfelt thank you goes to the teachers, friends, and families who have supported them along the way. It truly takes a village to nurture confidence, ideas, and ambition and your encouragement has helped bring these finalists to this moment.

This year’s final is especially meaningful as it marks the culmination of the 45th year of the competition. What began four and a half decades ago has continued to grow and flourish, empowering generation after generation of young women across Ireland.

We also extend our sincere thanks to our valued sponsor SCF Global Campus for supporting this programme and helping make opportunities like this possible.

Best of luck to all our finalists, we can’t wait to celebrate with you on Saturday in the Mansion House.

On this year’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, we are shining a light on a growing and deeply concerning reality: online violence, which already affects 35% of women worldwide.

Digital spaces offer immense opportunities, for learning, connection, creativity and participation. Yet they have also become places where gender-based violence spreads rapidly and with devastating consequences. For some girls, these attacks begin as early as nine years old.

This is not only a threat to the safety and dignity of women and girls. It is a threat to our democracies. When women are pushed out of digital spaces through harassment, intimidation or abuse, societies lose essential voices in public debate and decision-making.

Today, we reaffirm our collective commitment: to prevent all forms of gender-based violence, wherever they occur, online or offline.

UNESCO will continue working with partners, governments and communities to make this a reality. Learn more about our efforts:
