A small piece of litter can now carry an even more significant cost. 🚯

Since 1st September 2026, Ireland’s fixed fine for littering has increased from €150 to €250.

From cigarette butts and food wrappers to larger discarded items, litter can harm wildlife, pollute our communities and travel through drains and waterways into the wider environment.

Avoid the fine by finding a public bin or bringing your litter home with you. 💚

Commander Jimmy Byrne, Kilberry, Athy, Co. Kildare passed away peacefully on 5th September 2026 in the Oncology Ward, St. James Hospital, Dublin. Predeceased by his parents James (Jim) and Winn. Jimmy will be sadly missed by his loving wife Mottie, sons and daughters Mary, Linda, James and Darren, grandchildren Heidi, Winnie and Daisie, great granddaughter Darcie, daughter-in-law Emma, Darren’s partner Coralie, brothers and sisters Paddy, Mary, George, Catherine and John, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nephews and nieces, relatives, extended family, friends and his many colleagues in Civil Defence, Darkness into Light, O.N.E., Kilberry Community, Athy Town Promoters and Athy Tidy Towns.


Jimmy will repose in Thompson’s Funeral Home, Chapel Hill, Mount Hawkins, Athy (R14 NX80) on Monday 7th September, 2026 from 5pm until conclusion of prayers of 8pm. Arriving at St. Michael’s Parish Church, Athy for 11am Funeral Mass on Tuesday 8th September, 2026. Burial afterwards in St. Michael’s (New) Cemetery, Athy.


House Private Please. Family flowers only please, donations if desired to Sheila Clarkes Ward, St. James Hospital. Donation box at the funeral home and church.

On behalf of the Athy Tidy Towns Committee, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to wife Mottie, sons and daughters Mary, Linda, James and Darren, grandchildren Heidi, Winnie and Daisie, great granddaughter Darcie, daughter-in-law Emma, Darren’s partner Coralie, brothers and sisters Paddy, Mary, George, Catherine and John, and to all the Byrne family and friends on the very sad passing of Jimmy Byrne. 💔

Jimmy was a valued member and supporter of Athy Tidy Towns for so many years. His dedication to our community was truly immeasurable.

For over 25 years, Jimmy was a huge part of our Annual River Clean, giving his time, energy and commitment year after year to help keep Athy beautiful and our River Barrow clean.

His contribution to Athy Tidy Towns, and to the wider community, can never be underestimated.

We are so grateful for all the years of friendship, hard work and memories.

Thank you, Jimmy, for everything you did for Athy Tidy Towns and for our community. You will never be forgotten. ❤️

🌿 It’s fantastic to see the new wheelchair-friendly tables and seating being installed at the Barrow Quay in Athy.

A wonderful addition that will make the area more accessible and enjoyable for everyone. 👏

Well done to Kildare County Council ,public realm team and to everyone involved in bringing this project to life. It’s great to see accessibility and inclusion being prioritised in our town. ❤️🤍
