For many years the Tiglin Challenge outreach team have served men and women affected by homelessness, drug and alcohol addiction on our streets.Tiglin gives people with addiction problems a second chance, it gives them life beyond addiction. We strive to help the ‘whole person’, not just the substance abuse. The Tiglin Challenge approach is to teach a whole new way of living by addressing family relationships, work attitudes, self image, peer pressure, temptation, community relationships and a variety of other life skills. Jigginstown Manor by is a supported housing programme for young homeless people in Kildare.

Most people walking through the door at Jigginstown have never even written a CV.

A key worker at the centre provides one-to-one support for each resident & figures out what the next step looks like.

The goal of the program is to build life skills for the youth & also provide them with supports for permanent employment & housing.

This August, Danny and Sam are cycling from Greystones to Agadir, Morocco (around 10,000km) to raise funds for Tiglin's addiction rehabilitation and reintegration work.

Over the last 3 years, Danny has got to know some of the men in tiglin's aftercare program & watched them put their lives back together. He resonated with their journey because of his own life experiences.

Follow along as we will be documenting their incredible journey in the coming weeks.

Gerard has been cycling for years & was always looking for the next challenge.

When he came across Chase the Sun Ireland, he signed up straight away. Along with his brother he will cycle 336km from Belfast to Enniscrone in Sligo, sunrise to sunset, in one day, on 19th June.

New chicks and ducklings hatched at the Tiglin Men's Centre in Wicklow last week.

The men in the programme move the eggs into the incubator before they hatch. For the first 48 to 72 hours, they keep them warm and away from the flock. When they are strong enough, they go back. The newly hatched ones need that time. Away from the world, looked after, until they are ready.

The men doing this are move away from their old life with a new beginning, in a 9-month programme in the Wicklow hills. And in the daily routine of caring for something that vulnerable, keeping it alive, watching it grow stronger until it's ready to go back, they find themselves learning things about their own experience that can't be taught any other way.

The process mirrors what they are going through. They know it. And they handle the chicks accordingly.

Bernard has been free of alcohol and co***ne for 13 years now, and he's spent that time changing others' lives. He is now the head coach at Fight the Good Fight gym at Coolnagreina in Greystones, where he coaches kids, adults, and also people from Tiglin's aftercare program.
He is also a support worker at Tiglin's Men's Rehabilitation Centre in Ashford, where he brings his experience directly into the recovery programme.

Ellen Doherty ran the VHI Women's Mini Marathon for Tiglin and raised €840. Ecclesiastical Ireland matched the amount, which brought the total to €1,680.

What stood out wasn't only the run. The following week Ellen visited the Lighthouse Homeless Café in Dublin where over 100,000 meals are served each year. She volunteered & helped out those in need.

Aftercare is where recovery gets real.

Cormac supervises the community employment scheme at Tiglin's aftercare centre. His goal: help people bridge the gap between residential treatment and ordinary life.

He's crossed that gap himself. And from his experience, he know the benefits that going back to education can have on daily life.

Edith, David & Dolores run the assessments for our service users at the Lighthouse on Pearse Street. She meets people at their most vulnerable stages in life, and then walks with them through the various stages until a bed opens at one of our centres. She is the bridge between someone's decision for change and their new life.
