Children in Grief Need Unconditional Love ❤️
Children need special care and attention when they are grieving because they don’t have the emotional maturity that adults have. When someone they love dies, their whole world can feel as though it has fallen apart. More than anything, they need the reassurance of unconditional love.
When Mary O’Brien lost her father as a child, she later shared that there wasn’t really anyone there to help her through it. She had a mother and sister, but everyone was busy, and she went through her teenage years largely on her own. Looking back, she recognised how much she needed comfort and emotional support during that time.
For parents who have lost a child, it is important to remember that the other children are grieving too. Reach out to them. Love them unconditionally. Love them right where they are, and remind them that they are not to blame.
Children can sometimes blame themselves when a death happens through an accident or tragedy. They may carry feelings of guilt that they don’t know how to express. Sometimes what they need most is not an explanation, but love, understanding and reassurance.
Don’t put it off. Go to your children today. Tell them how much you love them. Look into their eyes, hold them in your arms, and simply love them.
God loves you and calls you His child. Now let that love flow through you to your children.
“How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!”
1 John 3:1
🙏 Father, forgive us when we fail to notice the hurt and pain our children are carrying. Help us to comfort them as You comfort us. Amen.
