Introduction

The crisis in English studies taking place in the 1970s was triggered by the emergence of theory offering diverse and often contradictory approaches compared to the relatively unified idealist/traditional approach to English literature. Such theory as post-structuralism, deconstruction, Marxism, feminism, cultural materialism, new historicism, and postcolonialism have opened up a new

world of interpretation by interrogating how literature is related to politics, ideology, philosophy and language.
