Bakudapan Food Study Group

Bakudapan Food Study Group BAKUDAPAN is a study group, based in Yogyakarta, that discuss ideas about food and it's relation with issues such politics, social and art.

Tentang kami

About us

BAKUDAPAN is a study group that discuss ideas about food, this group was initiated by Elia Nurvista and Khairunnisa. The word BAKUDAPAN itself is inspired by “bakudapa”, which comes from Manadonese (North Sulawesi) language meaning to “meet”, and also “kudapan” which is a kind of snack that is usually served when there is are activities such as a meeting, visiting, and even when hanging out. Therefore, “bakudapan” can be translated as eating snacks while meeting. Through this name, we would like to meet with people who have an interest in food. We believe that food can not only be about cooking and about history, conservation and introduce it to the world. Food can also be an instrument to speak about broader issues, such as politics, social, art and culture.

Spaces in Spices is a research project conducted by Bakudapan Food Study Group. Exploring through the notion of "ethnic food," we're questioning the term "ethnic" itself, who and how it's attached to certain groups. After the research, we assembled the stories and presented them into different shapes: stickers, short notes, and a map.

Retelling Spices, Sensing Spaces was a 6-day zine making event to activate and extend the stories we collected during our research. We invited all participants to create their one page zine per day with different themes and assembled them into one complete zine on the last day.

Thank you for all participants who joined and exchange stories with us. Also. thanks to Hikari Odaka for translating the workshop process and all MoT staff that supported us throughout our stay.

Retelling Spices, Sensing Spaces is a series of workshops from our recent project titled Spaces in Spices that currently exhibit in Museum Contemporary Of Tokyo (MoT).

We had 6 days workshop working with our research data (stickers, field-notes and photographs) and exhibition material that visitor participated with. During the research process, we visited some ‘ethnic restaurants’ and learn about the expansion of the term of “ethnic” itself, also connect migrant context through our encounters with the migrant community in different spaces.

This workshop is an attempt to familiarize the material of the work for retelling the stories about migrants community through the term of ‘ethnic food’. Even though that the word of ‘ethnic food’ is a Japanese term for the foreign restaurant from other countries, but somehow it’s not included French, Italian or Spanish cuisine. This workshop discussing what does the ‘ethnic food’ means and how to familiarize ourself with the new place, new stories, and new ways of seeing or understanding the various and diverse ways of living.

Spaces in Spices is a commissioned work by MoT as part of the exhibition titled “Choreography of Everyday Life” for their 30th anniversary. Our work is curated by Hikari Odaka.

We would like to extend our gratitude for all friends and communities we met during the trip. Our research guidance by Hiro-Kei .hiro Jong Pairez, Hosenka, Kosaten, Jun Kitazawa , Junichiro Endo, and all communities we have met along the way. Thank you very much, terima kasih,
