“RING OF PERFORMANCE”

Various ‘movement communities’ in Indonesia that are actively working in art and culture with the body as the main medium have inspired us to make a network, to share information, to collaborate in developing discourses, media and programs with unlimited context of possibility. Indonesia is multi-dimensional nation and inhabits the ‘Ring of Fire’, below the equato
r with its rich archipelago and large sea, also geographically strategic with its spiritually and materially rich culture. Those all are made stronger by the powerful culture including the countless performance traditions. Some examples are the placenta-cutting process from the mother and new born baby, to then be buried next to the front door of the house with a special ritual; the tradition to protest by standing during hot days (“pepe” in Javanese) in the city square; also the Ma’Nene tradition in Tana Toraja showing the bodies of the deceased are walked around the village. The rich performance traditions in Indonesia cover the birth to funeral rites, in peaceful as well as war situation. In the contemporary today, Indonesia is also the home for a generation that treats the body as an art and culture medium with its abundant possibilities. This generation has a strong cultural background and is working inventively within its artistic process. This performance art network entitled “THE RING OF PERFORMANCE” connects the chain of the performative movement communities, to support one another and to develop programs together. This network explores body art and culture with open varieties of implementation, works together according to the context of nature and society – locally and globally, performatively acts with the body as a medium but also explores performance as photo performance, video performance, as well as other media like graphic works, painting, sculpture, social work, exhibition and enterpreneurship like warung, cafe, art shop, gallery. This network is open for everyone and any medium who agrees with the method to work together in order to support our contemporary society with strong roots which is dynamic, plural, anti discrimination and violence. Ring Of Performance
Berbagai macam ‘komunitas bergerak’ di Indonesia yang aktif berkarya seni-budaya berbasis tubuh sebagai media utama, mendorong kami untuk berjaringan, bertukar informasi, bekerjasama mengembangkan wacana, media dan program dalam banyak konteks kemungkinan. Bangsa Indonesia adalah bangsa multi-dimensi, mendiami kawasan lingkar gunung berapi (Ring of Fire), dilalui garis khatulistiwa dengan kepulauan dan lautan luas, wilayah geografis yang sangat kaya dengan berbagai jenis kebudayaan yang tinggi secara spiritual dan material. Berbagai jenis ragam kekuatan kebudayaan menjadi kekayaan Nusantara, termasuk tradisi performatif yang kuat pula. Bagaimana proses pemotongan ari-ari (plasenta) dari ibu dan bayi yang baru dilahirkan, dikubur di depan samping pintu rumah dengan ritual simbolik khusus. Bagaimana tradisi Ma’Nene di Tana Toraja, ritual pengarakan mayat di seputar desanya. Sedemikian beragam tradisi performatif Indonesia, mulai dari prosesi kelahiran hingga kematian, dalam situasi damai maupun perang. Di jaman kontemporer hari ini, Indonesia juga merupakan rumah bagi generasi yang memperlakukan tubuh sebagai media seni-budaya dengan banyak kemungkinan. Generasi Indonesia ini memiliki latar belakang tradisi yang kuat, akademis atau wacana modern, dengan proses pengkaryaan maupun kesenimanan yang selalu diperbaharui sesuai kebutuhan jaman. Jaringan bergerak yang kita namakan sebagai “THE RING OF PERFORMANCE”, menghubungkan rantai komunitas bergerak performatif, saling berkunjung untuk mendukung dan menciptakan program bersama. Jaringan ini mengembangkan seni-budaya tubuh dengan banyak implementasi, bekerja sama sesuai konteks alam dan masyarakat sekitar secara lokal maupun global, selalu mengandung unsur performatif tampil dengan tubuh itu sendiri, maupun pengembangan sebagai photo performance, video performance, maupun media lain seperti seni grafis, lukis, patung, film, kerja sosial, pameran maupun kewirausahaan seperti warung, cafe, art shop, galeri. Jaringan ini terbuka untuk siapa saja dan media apapun, yang bisa saling bekerjasama untuk mendukung masyarakat kontemporer yang berakar kuat, dinamis, plural, tanpa diskriminasi maupun kekerasan merupakan metode gerak kita.
