Many of you will have seen the heartbreaking video and photos of a severely emaciated horse in Badung that recently went viral. BAWA was deeply concerned and saddened to see the state of this horse, who had reportedly continued to be ridden by tourists despite his condition.
Like many others, BAWA immediately contacted the relevant authorities; and we are grateful to Satpol PP Badung and the Animal Welfare Division of the Badung Agriculture Department for responding and taking the situation seriously.
Sadly, authorities have confirmed that the horse died on the 16th of September, and the other horse being kept at the stables has now been moved to Tabanan.
We are heartbroken that help came too late for this horse. We hope, however, that the attention his suffering has received will help prevent other animals from ever reaching such a desperate condition. Whether animals are used for tourism, work, entertainment or anything else, their welfare must come first. No animal should be made to work when sick, injured, severely underweight or unfit. And no animal should have to suffer until their condition becomes so extreme before action can be taken.
For this horse, help came too late. But we are grateful that so many people saw his suffering and spoke up for him, and that the authorities responded. We hope the attention this case has received leads to better care, greater oversight and earlier intervention for other animals at risk.
BAWA will continue to speak up when animals are at risk and work with the relevant authorities and communities to improve animal welfare across Bali.
