KADEK DEVIKA (“DEVIKA”) – GRADE 9

Fifteen-year-old Devika is hoping to graduate high school in Bangli in June, 2029.

Devika is the middle child. She has an older sister in grade 12 and a little brother in grade 3. Her older sister can go this far in her education since she gets a scholarship from their village as the oldest child. Meanwhile, Devika and her brother do not get the same support. Due to this, Devika is on the brink of dropping out of school, following in her parents’ footsteps. Devika’s parents had it worse and they could only complete primary school.

Devika’s family has been poor for generations. Her late grandfather lived on a land that was, and still is, owned by a wealthy family, who lives in South Bali. The landowner only asks Devika’s family to take care of the land and the house. Devika’s family was given a shack, which they divided into three rooms for Devika and her sister, Devika’s parents and her brother, and the last room is being used by her grandmother.

Devika’s father works as a laborer, who carries fertilizer to the field and cultivates the field. Her mother sometimes works as a laborer as well when there is more demand, such as during the harvesting season. Devika joins her parents when she does not have any classes to earn extra money.

Devika is hoping to continue to a senior high like her sister. Her biggest dream is to work abroad in Japan, and it will be impossible to pursue if she does not get a senior high diploma at the very least, which her family cannot afford. Devika joins girl scouts as her extra-curricular activity at school. Her favorite subject to learn the most is science.

KADEK RESA (“RESA”) – GRADE 9

Almost sixteen-year-old Resa is hoping to graduate high school in Bangli in June, 2029.

Resa is an only child. He lives with his parents, grandmother, and adopted older brother. His older brother is actually his cousin, who is his paternal aunt’s son. His aunt remarried and left him behind. So, Resa’s father adopted him.

Resa’s family has generational poverty. His parents dropped out in primary school, while his grandmother did not go to school at all. His brother dropped out of school after completing junior high due to their extremely impoverished situation. He currently works as a laborer in the field, just like Resa’s father. Meanwhile, Resa’s mother earns money by making and selling Balinese offerings. Resa’s parents can only earn around US$50 per month to feed their family of five. Resa’s brother earns money just enough for his needs.

Without a sponsorship, Resa will have to drop out of school after he graduates from junior high this June, following in his brother’s footsteps. Meanwhile, Resa is a clever boy. He really wants to be able to continue to a vocational senior high school where can learn motorbike engineering, as his dream is to become a mechanic and to establish his own motorbike garage shop. His friend introduces him to the world of mechanics, and he’s passionate in that field, despite not having a motorbike. Resa goes to school by foot when his father can’t take him, as their family only has one motorbike. Resa’s other hobby is playing futsal with his friends at school.

Resa joins the boy scouts as his extra-curricular activity at school. He is also part of the boy scout committee for their weekend camp. Resa’s favorite subject to learn at school is physical education or sports, as he is an active boy. At home, Resa helps his mother in making and selling offerings so they can earn more money. He also joins his grandmother in working for their neighbor by wrapping up snacks that they make, and he earns at least US$1 or US$5 at most per day, depending on how many snacks he can wrap. But he only gets to work there every Sunday when he does not have any classes.

If you would like to sponsor KADEK RESA and give him a chance to finish high school, please select a $40 USD monthly donation here: https://balichildrensproject.org/become-a-sponsor/ and input his name into the dedication box.

Bali Children's Project spent a year working with a community to turn around their waste issues. Previously, there was no waste collection and no help. Combined with education sessions and promotion of community ownership, this village transformed it's waste problem.

The program was made possible thanks to Timothy Sykes John Nielsen, Acacia.co and Circle Club Asia.

Welcome to the Bali Children's Project Kindergarten Ogoh-ogoh parade in Bali!

The students from our very own kindergarten put on quite the show with their early Ogoh Ogoh parade.

Before Bali's day of silence, communities parade Ogoh Ogoh (monsters and demons!) which represent evil and undesirable traits.

These Ogoh Ogoh are paraded and do battle, with the Ogoh Ogoh unltimately losing and being destroyed after, representing the victory of good over evil - helping to wash away negative traits and act as a purification.

We were so proud of the students at our school, and the village of Penestanan Kaja who came out in force to see their parade.
