Meet Kirstie Chalmers (.chalmers), a dedicated BSc Geography graduate from the University of St Andrews. With a strong background in environmental management and fieldwork, Kirstie has volunteered with organizations such as the East Lothian Council Ranger Service and Transition St Andrews, focusing on habitat restoration and tree planting.

During her time in Lombok, she supported students from the University of Mataram in conducting a carbon stock assessment as part of our Ecological Mangrove Rehabilitation project. Her previous internship with the Scottish Saltmarsh ignited her passion for mangroves, and she is eager to deepen her understanding while sharing her expertise with the local community.

In addition to her work on mangrove conservation, Kirstie participated in coral reef conservation efforts, attended ecotourism classes, and tested culinary tourism packages for our startup, CulTour. Her journey began with a hike to the stunning Benang Kelambu Waterfall, and she also had the opportunity to experience the excitement of a live MotoGP event and Skylancing’s paragliding. We are grateful to have Kirstie as part of the Better Together Indonesia family.

On October 9, 2024, a Forum Group Discussion was held at Lombok Plaza Hotel Mataram to discuss the development of Bagek Kembar Ecotourism. The event was organized by the Biology Education Department, University of Mataram, and involved key stakeholders, including the birdwatching community, Rinjani National Park, MMAF Fisheries Extension, local schools, practitioners, academics, and international partners.

Birdwatching & Crab Farming: Prof. Gito Hadiprayitno shared valuable insights on local biodiversity, identifying 57 bird species, 11 of which are protected. Migratory species are under threat, making conservation efforts crucial. Prof. Gito also highlighted the potential of crab farming as a livelihood, with concerns around feed costs and sustainability addressed by cultivating black mussels as a cost-effective feed alternative.

Birdwatching Tourism: The birdwatching community emphasized the potential for international birdwatching tourism, though challenges remain in local guide education and infrastructure, such as signage in key birdwatching areas.

Visitor Mapping & Institutional Growth: To better cater to visitors, Bagek Kembar needs to map its visitor categories, which will guide the development of affordable accommodations and restaurants. Additionally, Better Together Indonesia Foundation stressed the need to organize the institution into distinct groups (tourism, fisheries, livestock, education) to streamline funding opportunities.

Better Together Indonesia Foundation had the privilege of providing training during the Digital Marketing Training for Marine Village Tourism Operators, organized by the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (.kkp) in Bali from September 25-27, 2024.

This workshop brought together 25 participants from 12 provinces throughout Indonesia, focusing on enhancing skills in digital marketing, photography, and content creation to support community-based tourism.

Lalu Ghifary () from our social media team facilitated a session on using Canva to create engaging posts for Instagram and Facebook. Meanwhile, Harjan Pratama, our volunteer from Pratama Capture (), led a mobile photography workshop at Double Six Beach, emphasizing lighting, camera settings, and post-processing techniques.

The organizer anticipates that Marine Village Tourism Operators will be able to effectively design, promote, and market their packages, thereby attracting more visitors and contributing to the development of sustainable tourism.

We are excited to share the progress of the One Farmer One Contract initiative by Better Together Indonesia, funded by . This project is focused on empowering coffee farmers in Lombok through sustainable agriculture and partnerships with local coffee shops. In the first two months, we conducted outreach and education with local farmers, assessing their needs and land conditions. What began with two farmers has now expanded to fifteen, thanks to collaborations with KOPIKITA and KAFE ARIMBI. These partnerships aim to establish stable markets and support long-term income for farmers.

Training sessions during this timeline emphasized post-harvest coffee processing techniques, allowing farmers to improve coffee quality and marketability. Farmers have been equipped with skills to enhance their production and reduce waste. Through hands-on training, they have also developed an understanding of how to evaluate their coffee using manual brewing techniques. As a result of these efforts, we have secured production agreements for 500 kg of coffee and are exploring coffee-based ecotourism as a future livelihood option.

Moving forward, the project will install the essential infrastructure, including pulver machines and bamboo drying racks, to improve processing efficiency. Our next steps include securing additional funding to support fifteen women farmers and developing coffee ecotourism as a way to diversify income streams. With the natural beauty of Lombok’s waterfalls and scenery, the community has great potential to attract visitors and create sustainable livelihoods beyond coffee farming.

Introducing CulTour Indonesia, where gastronomy meets ecotourism!

In alignment with our dedication to advancing our youth startup incubation program, Better Together Indonesia Foundation incubates CulTour Indonesia, a tour and travel company founded by a team of five youths with mentoring and seed funding, to promote Indonesian ecotourism through a culinary lens. The startup offers immersive experiences, blending travel with the discovery of local cuisine under the concept of "Hunting Local Food."
