✨ The final day of RWI, UNEP, and UN ESCAP capacity-building course on Strengthening Legal Responses to Environmental Harm: Advancing Environmental Justice and Human Rights in Southeast Asia was one to remember!

Participants began the day with a site visit to the Administrative Court of Thailand, where they witnessed a live hearing of an environmental law case—an invaluable opportunity to see Thai legal procedures in action. They were then welcomed by distinguished justices Dr. Saithip Sukhateepan, Dr. Praphot Klai-Suban, and Dr. Chanwit Chaikan, who shared insights on the history of the Administrative Court and its environmental jurisprudence.

The course closed with a dynamic discussion of key takeaways and participants’ final reflections. 💡

A heartfelt thank you to our co-organisers and participants for their enthusiasm, curiosity, and commitment throughout the course! Special thanks to Sida for its generous support.🌿

🌏 2025 BLC Online: Advancing Environmental Rights in Southeast Asia

As part of the online phase of this year’s BLC, 24 participants from Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam, Cambodia, the Philippines, and Malaysia—including NHRI staff, prosecutors, and public interest lawyers—joined two insightful webinars.

Webinar 1 – Transboundary Environmental Harm: Lessons from Indonesia
Led by Prof. M. R. Andri Gunawan Wibisana, participants explored precedent-setting cases, including Tanjung Jati Coal Plant and peat fire litigation, highlighting holistic EIAs, market-share liability, and the application of human rights–based arguments in environmental cases.

Webinar 2 – Right to a Healthy Environment
Led by Dr. Claudia Ituarte-Lima, discussions focused on:
• Ecosystem-based approaches linking human rights and environmental protection.
• Global and regional developments, including the ICJ Advisory Opinion and UN resolutions.
• Local implementation challenges and opportunities across SEA.

📌 Key Takeaways:
Environmental rights intersect with human rights and are reinforced by international and regional legal frameworks. The discussions underscored the need for multi-actor collaboration, highlighted the vital contribution of legal practitioners on the ground in shaping future frameworks, and reinforced that procedural rights are essential to advancing environmental justice. A human rights–based approach can also strengthen accountability, ensuring that justice remains central in addressing environmental harms.

🇮🇩 Selamat Hari Kemerdekaan, Indonesia!

Since 2005, Jakarta has been home to one of RWI’s first offices abroad — and our very first in Asia. Over two decades, we’ve worked with partners across Indonesia to strengthen human rights, the rule of law, and access to justice — through human rights education, institutional strengthening, and research on pressing issues like business and human rights, climate change and environmental governance.

We’re proud to support national efforts for a more just, inclusive, and sustainable future.

🤝 Strengthening partnerships on urgent human rights issues!

RWI Indonesia, represented by Country Director Windi Arini and Programme Officer Charlie Albajili, met with Dr. Prabianto Mukti Wibowo, M.Sc., Vice Chair for Internal Affairs and Commissioner for Complaints at Komnas HAM (Indonesia’s National Commission on Human Rights) .ham

The meeting explored potential collaboration on business and human rights (BHR), environment, and climate change—all priority areas for Komnas HAM and RWI. 🌱⚖️

The discussion also touched on the recent ICJ advisory opinion on climate change and the importance of effective remedy mechanisms for rights violations linked to business and environmental harm.

We look forward to working together to advance rights-based solutions to these urgent challenges. 💪

📍 Bali, Indonesia

🌿 At the 5th ASEAN Environmental Law Conference, judges, legal experts, and CSOs from across Southeast Asia came together to explore how the law can protect our environment and promote environmental justice.

💬 In our session, “Advancing the Right to a Healthy Environment – The Role of the Judiciary in Southeast Asia,” speakers from Indonesia and the Philippines shared experiences on strengthening environmental adjudication—highlighting innovations like the Philippine RPEC, Indonesia’s environmental judge certification, and updated court regulations.

📘 We also received feedback on the Draft Guidebook on Rules of Procedure for Environmental Cases, developed by RWI and ICJ. The guidebook offers practical tools for judges to improve access to justice, protect vulnerable communities, and counter SLAPPs.

🤝 With support from Sida, this work reflects our shared commitment to environmental justice, human rights, and the rule of law.

Grateful to our partners .asia , , and ELAW 🌱

🌿 Your Right to Breathe, Drink, and Live — Free from Plastic.

This year’s focuses on ending plastic pollution — a challenge with deep human rights implications.

At the Raoul Wallenberg Institute, we work to advance the understanding that a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment is essential to the full enjoyment of human rights.

Through our research, partnerships, and capacity-building across Asia and beyond, we support efforts to strengthen environmental governance and promote justice for communities most affected by environmental harm.

Equality cannot wait; it’s time to ! 🚀💜

Through the RWI Afghanistan Programme, Afghan female scholars are pursuing postgraduate studies in Indonesia, breaking barriers and creating pathways for future generations.

But their journey isn’t just their own. It’s supported by families and entire communities who believe in the power of education. As one student’s brother shared, ‘We are very grateful that our sister was selected for this scholarship, because we understand the value of knowledge.’

Real change happens when everyone—women, men, families, and communities—stand together to push for progress. A world where every woman’s right to learn is valued and defended is possible when we work collectively, to ensure no one is left behind.

Let’s keep moving forward, together! 💜
