🌏 Advancing environmental rights in Southeast Asia
On 9-10 June 2026, NHRI officials from Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Timor-Leste gathered in Bangkok for the in-person phase of RWI’s Environmental Rights Blended Learning Course, implemented with the support of Sida.
Through workshops, peer learning and practical exercises, participants explored how human rights institutions can strengthen environmental governance, promote access to information and justice, protect environmental human rights defenders, and support implementation of the ASEAN Declaration on the Right to a Safe, Clean, Healthy and Sustainable Environment.
A key lesson: advancing environmental rights requires a whole-of-NHRI approach to drive meaningful change. Participants highlighted the value of the course’s practical approach, rich learning materials, regional case studies, and the opportunity to learn from fellow NHRIs across ASEAN.
The training concluded with the development of draft institutional action plans aimed at translating learning into concrete action at national and regional levels.
