First ever Bawean Warty Pigs born ex-situ!
In May 2024 we received the first three Bawean Warty Pigs (Sus blouchi) to ever enter human care. These three individuals were caught in illegal snare traps and rescued by bbksdajatim. About 18 months later the first ever Bawean Warty Piglets were born outside of Bawean Island!
These two piglets represent more than just another breeding success for PCBA but a lifeline for a terminally threatened species. With the raging African Swine Fever (ASF) epidemic the Bawean Warty Pig might well be one of the most threatened wild pig species on earth. This is due to the fact that the entire global population is concentrated in one spot without zoo-geographic boundaries that might stop the spread of the ASF virus. Therefore, it's of crucial importance to establish a secure ex-situ population to safeguard the Bawean Warty Pig from eradication. Now we have made yet another step towards this big goal…

Today is world pangolin day!

With all South-East Asian Pangolins (Manis sp.) on the brink of extinction due to the relentless hunting for the traditional medizin, here at PCBA we do our best to contribute to the establishment of a viable ex-situ safety net population.
Husbandry of Pangolins in human care is not a simple undertaking and often not very successful. Thanks to our dedicated facilities and excellent caretakers we have been able to work with the Pangolins in our care without any actual difficulties.
Just a few days ago we made the next major step forward on our quest to conserve the Sunda Pangolin (Manis javanica) ex-situ.

Our first captive bred Pangolin was born at PCBA!

Today is "Reverse the Red" day.
The red we want to reverse is that of the IUCN Redlist.
Here at PCBA our sole purpose is just that, to ensure the survival of some of Indonesia's most threatened species.

To do so we collaborate with a whole host of partners.
Just during the past few days we co-hosted the conservation action planning workshop for Javan and Bawean Warty Pigs.
Together with stakeholders all across the board we discussed how we can guarantee that these two species will see "their red reversed" and be safeguarded from extinction.

Our key competence in conserving Warty Pigs and many other species is in ex-situ conservation breeding.
Just recently the first ever Bawean Warty Piglets have been born in human care. Marking a true milestone in conserving one of the worlds most threatened pig species.

Every young animal born or hatched here at PCBA is special, representing a crucial step towards safe ex-situ populations for some of Indonesia's most threatened animal species. Nevertheless, some offspring are even more exciting than all the others.
One such baby is the first ever Striped Rabbit to be growing up ex-situ!
The Sumatran striped Rabbit (Nesolagus netscheri) is a true enigma and, as its sister species from the Annamite Mountain Range (Nesolagus timminis) is considered very hard to maintain under human care.
Thanks to very deticated care and specialized facilities we have been able to not only keep our founder individuals happy and healthy but also breed the Sumatran Striped Rabbit for the very first time.
This landmark success has only been possible thanks to the tireless efforts by our animal husbandry team here in Prigen! Zoologische Gesellschaft für Arten- und Populationsschutz e.V. - ZGAP has been a vital partner all along the way and generous support by Plumploris e.V. and Zoo Osnabrück enabled us to set up facilities tailored to the needs of this remarkable species.
A species shout out goes to Nguyễn Văn Linh , whitout his amazing field research we wouldnt have been able to get that far.

at PCBA we intend to have offspring raised by their parents, by doing so we give our animals the best chance to display natural behavior and develop into healthy future breeders.
Unfortunately every now and then that does not go as planned, recently a female critically endangered Malay crestless Fireback (Lophura erythrophthalma) abandoned her nest and clutch after a fight with her partner. Fortunately we were able to rescue the eggs and subsequently entrust them to one of our Modern Game Bantam (MGB) hens. MGB are a very slow growing chicken breed that make ideal "siblings" for pheasant chicks, being not overly competitive. Even more importantly, the hens are exemplary mothers, taking stellar care of their own and others chicks.
raising pheasant chicks under a foster hen appears to be the second best choice after parent rearing, giving the chicks at least a good range of natural behavior which would be hard to mimic when hand rearing.

As mentioned here by our partners at IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group , we have had a very productive dry season here in Prigen. We are especially proud of the continued population growth of the otherwise likely extinct Maratua Shama but also of our first successful reproductions of Grey-backed Myna and Crested Jayshrike

During the past three months, TSI - Prigen Conservation Breeding Ark (PCBA) successfully raised 16 Maratua Shamas, 7 Larwo Shamas, 3 Kangean Shamas, 10 Javan White-eyes, 2 Javan Green Magpies, 2 Javan Pied Starlings, and 1 Straw-headed Bulbul.
Following a previous failed attempt, the first Crested Jayshrike of the Javan endemic nominate form was successfully raised at PCBA. The Grey-backed Myna bred at PCBA for the first time.

Success long in the making
For seven years we have been trying to get our Crested Jayshrikes (Platylophus galericulatus galericulatus) to reproduce, to no avail.
A year ago we finally saw reproductive behavior in our birds, a few eggs were laid but unfortunately destroyed.
Earlier this year a very first chick hatched in our incubator Grumbach Brutgeräte but failed to thrive and ultimately did not survive.
Some six weeks ago a second Jayshrike chick hatched and this time we were more successful. For the very first time at PCBA a Platylophus grew up and fledged!
This is an important breakthrough with a species that is notoriously difficult to maintain ex-situ let alone breed. While the Crested Jayshrike as a species might not be at immediate risk of eradication, the blue-eyed Javan subspecies is under terminal threat of extinction.

PCBA recently turned 8 years old. In 2017 PCBA was planned as a breeding facility exclusively for Indonesia's most threatened Songbirds. In 2019 we welcomed our first mammals, a group of Javan warty Pigs (Sus verrucosus). By now, in 2025, PCBA has developed into one of South-East Asia's leading ex-situ conservation centers.

This exceptional development has only been possible thanks to the overwhelming and continous contributions by our partners and supporters!
