A huge shoutout to the Class of 2029 at the Asian School of the Environment, NTUsg (Nanyang Technological University in Singapore), for being such exceptional participants in the coral workshop! We hope you enjoyed your time with the reef, the corals, and the ocean as much as we enjoyed our time with you. Thank you for your engagement, curiosity, and dedication.

As Senior Lecturer Dr. Shawn Lum aptly stated: „It’s not just about physically planting a coral; it’s about building a relationship with the ocean and all the living things within it. I believe this will be the lasting impact of this activity.“

Engaging young adults in environmental initiatives like the coral workshop is crucial for fostering a deeper understanding of marine ecosystems and promoting sustainability. By immersing students in hands-on experiences, we empower them to become advocates for the ocean and its inhabitants.

We are tremendously grateful for the long-standing support of NTU ASE and hope that this class will come back in 2029 and check how much their corals have grown.

“Awareness is high - Action is not.” One of the many interesting insights we have just gathered from Jeanne and Morgane’s field insight report. For several weeks, the two trainees interviewed marine tourists and travelers at the Padangbai ferry terminal, at local dive boat departure points and other locations in Bali.

The results reveal a strong contradiction between awareness and action. “While most respondents care about environmental issues, only a minority actively seek opportunities to contribute during their holidays.”

Results are out from one of our early pilot studies on coral growth, and we are anything but short of amazed. While we frequently dive the reef and marvel at the thriving corals, seeing actual data on growth rates in this pilot study truly puts things into perspective.

Over a period of several months, our scientific team has been closely monitoring and measuring coral growth in a designated pilot survey area at a depth of 5 m. From October to February, we observed remarkable growth in Acropora corals, with an impressive average increase of 3.88 cm after just three months!

Swipe to see the incredible before-and-after images we've edited to highlight these changes. Each growth not only showcases the resilience of these corals but also underscores the importance of our reef restoration efforts. Together, we can help preserve and nurture our vibrant underwater ecosystems! 💙✨

At the rare occasions that we don’t plant or talk about corals🪸, we talk about the benefits of reef restoration, namely the support of biodiversity recovery.🐠

This is a wide and rather complex field, even less researched underwater than on land. But we have always believed that reef restoration works. We see it every day. The restored reef is thriving, and fish are returning at a remarkably fast pace.

We are therefore thrilled to share with you the results of a recent study by one of our research interns, Solen Perrochon, at the Livingseas Coral Restoration Site in Padangbai: “Temporal succession of reef fish communities on restored reefs of varying ages”.

What does that actually mean? It means tracking how the types of fish living on a rebuilt coral reef change over the years. Just like an abandoned field slowly grows into a forest, a new reef goes through “phases.” Scientists study reefs of different ages to see which fish move in first, and how the community matures into a balanced food web over time.

Thank you, Solen, for your hard work and dedication to advancing our understanding of coral reef ecosystems!🙏 Your research is invaluable in helping us appreciate the dynamics of reef restoration and its positive impact on marine life.

And here it is! The new structure, conceptualized, designed and now installed by our interns from Lombok!

We are thrilled to see the new reef substrate come to life, with fish immediately taking to it and using the open cavities for shelter and hiding places. We can confidently say that the goal of creating additional space and providing habitat and shelter for fish and marine life has been achieved—100%!💯

Thank you Ibnu, Samsuri, Pandu and Buhari for your passion, dedication and hard work on this project.💙🙏🪸
