KSP is honored to receive the Beauval Nature Award. The 2025 theme, Technology and Innovation to Preserve Nature, highlights the importance of innovative approaches in conservation.

Our work utilizing camera traps for the Komodo dragon monitoring program, as well as implementing the SMART patrol mobile application and software to support government authorities and local communities in monitoring and patrolling Komodo dragon habitats, and to help combat poaching in Komodo National Park and Flores Island, contributed to this recognition.

With 28% of the public vote, this achievement reflects the strength of our multi-stakeholder collaborative efforts. We sincerely thank everyone who supported and voted for us.

A glimpse of our outdoor learning activities with local students of a public school on Rinca Island. This activity has taught them about the richness of biodiversity in their hometown and the importance to conserve them. We envision continuing to do this with other local school students.

We wish you all a happy Year-End holiday!

Over the past eight years, we have implemented a classroom-based awareness program for students residing in the Komodo dragon’s distribution range. This program has proven—through a series of assessments—to be an efficient and effective method for increasing students’ basic knowledge of Komodo dragon ecology.
This year, we introduced an additional approach: a pilot education initiative called Place-Based Outdoor Learning. This method emphasizes the importance of familiarizing students with their own local biodiversity to foster a sense of ownership and pride in native species. The approach has been widely tested globally with established guidelines, and we are eager to learn how it will contribute to Komodo dragon conservation efforts.
In collaboration with Komodo National Park authority, we implemented the pilot program on Rinca Island, targeting students from the local school. We guided them in exploring, hiking, and learning about the local landscape and biodiversity, while also teaching key conservation concepts during a two-day program. Based on insights from this pilot, we aim to develop improved learning materials and expand implementation—not only for other schools within Komodo National Park, but also for schools throughout the Komodo dragon’s distribution range.

Monitoring a wild species means that we need to monitor its prey too. The wild deer and buffalo are two main prey of the komodo dragon in the wild that we keep our eyes on to ensure the survival of the komodo dragon.

Happy the 80th Independence of the Republic of Indonesia!
Reminding you every year; that offers of Komodo research collaboration or requests related to research to be conducted in protected areas of Komodo dragon habitat must be carried out in accordance with applicable laws and regulations regarding national animals and especially those living in protected areas (National Parks and Nature Reserves, for example). Therefore, the best step that academic colleagues and researchers can take is to take care of permits to the relevant government units for Komodo dragons; for example, the Komodo National Park Office (.komodo), then contact us regarding their research plans - if they need collaboration or assistance from us. It would be wise for you not to correspond with us directly before consulting with the authorities.
Dirgahayu Republik Indonesia ke-80!
