A newly installed rope nursery with a 1-year-old nursery. Both are seeded with thermotolerant corals that survived the mass bleaching event in Raja Ampat's shallow waters.
After 1 year, coral fragments can be harvested to seed the outplanting area. New nurseries are seeded with different species and different genotypes.

Over 12 different genotypes of foliate Montipora are now growing nicely in our Montipora nursery. It was created from 2000 fragments and will cover 200 m2. These are now 6 months old and doing pretty well, adapting to slightly warmer conditions. Hopefully, in 1 year, we will be able to use some fragments from this nursery to outplant on our outer reef and other places on the back reef.

Anchor and dynamite fishing damage, which wipes out thin, branching Acropora fields, is a real challenge to restore in Indonesia.
Not only is the upper reef slope being transformed into a desert rubble field, but it slowly falls, on the lower still healthy reef below. This is called the coral avalanche.
One of the methods used to fix this is called substrate stabilization, using wire mesh.
Its installation is part of our curriculum.

1-day-old rope planting versus 1-year-old rope planting in Yenbekwan, Raja Ampat. Using leftover wood pieces and rope. Very easy and cheap to install; on sand, the wire substrate stabilization gets buried, the corals grow a bit higher, and give a much better result.

Last night in Raja Ampat, we concluded 4 weeks of Coral Reef restoration Training with a Coral Spawning Monitoring course. We were lucky enough to witness 1 Acropora sp, 1 Porites lobata, 2 Platygyra sp, 1 Astrea sp, 1 Goniastrea sp, 5 Montipora sp, 1 Echnophyllia, and 1 Mimic anemone (Phyllodiscus semoni) during the night dive. On the other side, the students also collected 1003 Drupella and 47 Crown of Thorn Starfish... What a night! Congrats, everyone; we couldn't have finished the course any other way!
