For the last 2 nights, we got an explosion of Coelastrea aspera spawns in North Bali and Nusa Penida.
This very shallow reef coral species is a remarkable explosive spawner.
The setting of that species is very characteristic. You can see on the macro setting shots that the eggs are dispersed around the oral disk. This reflects the sperm/ovary packets at their respective mesenteries before they are rolled into an egg/sperm bundle, which will eventually be released through the mouth. The setting to release time is quite long, and during this time you can observe a very unique coloration, with an orange/pink ring around the mouth, that will only last less than 30 minutes.

What a fantastic morning with the group of local kids from visiting the Amed coral nursery to learn about corals, their importance and help plant and repopulate the reef.

Some BTS shots of the children enjoying tying the fragments to the reef stars and the Ocean Gardener team placing the reef stars in their final location as the kids snorkel around to see its final placement.

Thank you all the chaperones that came out to make sure the kids were safe while snorkel the bay.

Day 2 of setting up a new nursery for . Yesterday was a tiring day of hammering down the wooden stakes. Today, we harvested coral fragments from our donor colonies in our coral nursery, strung them onto ropes and stretched them out across the stakes.

In a few years, the Acropora fragments will grow and interwine. Their complex structures will allow fish to hide and find homes. In 3-4 years, they will anchor onto the seafloor, providing habitats for marine life again.

You can see the coral rubble in the front of the frame. This was from the damaged reefs from pontoon activity here in Ped.
