The Vatican's Secretary of State, Cardinal Pietro Parolin, strongly condemned the United States and Israel's airstrikes on Iranian territory. In an interview with Vatican News on March 4, 2026, he expressed deep concern over what he called the alarming "erosion of international law."

Cardinal Parolin asserted that "justice has been replaced by force; the force of law has been replaced by the law of force."

He criticized the concept of "preventive war" used to justify the attacks, warning that if every nation feels entitled to wage such a war, the entire world risks being "burned" or destroyed.

The Vatican warned that the attacks, and Tehran's military response, could trigger a spiral of global violence with unpredictable consequences.

In addition to the Secretary of State, Pope Leo XIV has repeatedly called for an end to the violence since the attacks began in late February 2026, calling the situation a "tragedy of enormous proportions" and urging leaders to return to the path of dialogue and diplomacy.
