From 4โ€“6 August 2026, the SEA-MaP Regional Project convened the Dissemination Event: Data and Metrics in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia ๐Ÿ‡ฒ๐Ÿ‡พ, bringing together representatives from ASEAN Member States (AMS), the ASEAN Secretariat, and relevant stakeholders to strengthen regional knowledge exchange and capacity for plastic pollution assessment and monitoring.

We extend our appreciation to the Kementerian Sumber Asli dan Kelestarian Alam (NRES) (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability of Malaysia) as Host of the event; the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) of the Philippines as ASEAN Working Group on Coastal and Marine Environment (AWGCME) Chair/SEA-MaP Project Steering Committee (PSC) Co-Chair; and PSC members, for their continued leadership and support in advancing regional cooperation on marine plastics.

The three-day hybrid event focused on two regional knowledge products: the Regional Baseline Report and the Guidebook on Common Methodologies for Assessment and Monitoring of Plastic Pollution. Together, they provide complementary guidance to support harmonized assessment and monitoring of plastic pollution across the plastics life cycle.

The event featured a High-Level Policy Forum, country exchanges, and technical training. Participants shared evidence needs and opportunities to enhance monitoring, while strengthening their capacity to apply common methodologies in their national contexts.

The event supports the implementation of the ASEAN Regional Action Plan for Combating Marine Debris and contributes to ASEANโ€™s broader efforts to advance plastics circularity.

On 23 July 2026 - the second day of the study tour of the SEA-MaP Knowledge Exchange Program 2026 in Da Nang, Viet Nam, saw participants visit the Cu Lao Cham Islands, which has practiced zero-waste and plastic-free island management initiatives since 2009, as well as a Tai Sinh Recycling Workshop (XฦฐแปŸng Tรกi Sinh ) in Da Nang, a local studio and educational space that exhibits various artworks, such as sculptures, bags, and hats that are made entirely of used plastics and waste materials ranging from detergent bottles to television scraps. The visits allowed participants further opportunity to observe local-level sustainability practices in action.

The site visit marks the final day of the Program in 2026. Our sincere thanks to host country Viet Nam, particularly the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment for the warm hospitality and support extended throughout the Program.
