Human trafficking is a prominent human security issue in ASEAN. But it gets even more complex when the victims are women who get deceived into force marriages in foreign countries like China — a phenomenon often called “bride trafficking” or “mail order brides”.
Through a criminological perspective, this article aims to debunk why bride trafficking occurs. It’s a mix of state weaknesses, economic grievances, and a lack of coherent regional frameworks.
