Policymakers play a critical role in unlocking effective methane mitigation, mobilizing financing, and establishing strategic pathways that turn climate commitments into measurable action. As one of the fastest opportunities to slow global warming, methane abatement requires strong governance, evidence-based policies, and collaboration across sectors to drive meaningful impact.

As Program 4 of the "Strengthening Indonesian Government Capacity on Methane Emission Management in Indonesia's Oil and Gas Sector" initiative, developed by ECADIN in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), this high-level convening will take place on 9–10 June 2026, 08.30–16.00 WIB in Jakarta. The forum will bring together policymakers, industry leaders, researchers, and international experts to discuss methane governance, scientific measurement, financing mechanisms, and practical mitigation strategies.

Through data-driven discussions and cross-sector collaboration, participants will explore opportunities to strengthen Indonesia's methane management framework and accelerate emission reduction efforts in support of national energy and climate objectives.

Indonesia’s new waste policies (Presidential Regulation 109/2025) are catalyzing a major roll‑out of 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲‑𝘁𝗼‑𝗘𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗴𝘆 (𝗪𝘁𝗘) plants aimed at generating electricity from municipal waste. In parallel, 𝗪𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲‑𝘁𝗼‑𝗩𝗮𝗹𝘂𝗲 (𝗪𝘁𝗩) approaches (converting waste into fuels, chemicals, compost or construction materials) are emerging globally as part of the circular economy, though less emphasized in current Indonesian policy.

Hydropower is often associated with dams. But in certain landscapes, especially mountainous regions, there’s an approach that has existed for more than a century: Run-of-river hydropower.

Built around 1910 in the Kander valley, canton of Bern, Switzerland, the Kandergrund hydropower plant uses natural elevation and river water channeled through a 4.2-kilometer tunnel to generate electricity. Today it operates at a capacity of 18.8 MW, producing 97 GWh annually.

This system shows how energy infrastructure adapts to the natural landscape.

What if methane leaks could no longer stay invisible? 🛰️

Methane is responsible for roughly 30% of global warming since pre-industrial times. Yet for years, one of the biggest challenges has been visibility: knowing where emissions come from, how large they are, and how quickly they can be addressed.

Today, 𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗺𝗼𝗻𝗶𝘁𝗼𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝘀 are changing that.

From global databases to satellite-based detection systems, these tools are helping governments, industries, and researchers move from estimated emissions to more evidence-based action.

The message is clear: climate governance is becoming more transparent.

As open data improves, accountability is shifting from estimated reporting to 𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲-𝗯𝗮𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.

Nuclear science is already part of how we stay healthy, eat safely, and protect the planet.

Through the 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗲 𝗞𝗻𝗼𝘄𝗹𝗲𝗱𝗴𝗲 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝘀 – 𝗢𝗻𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝗸𝘀𝗵𝗼𝗽 𝗼𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗰𝗵𝗻𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝘆 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁, 𝗥𝗲𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗩𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (𝗠𝗥𝗩) 𝗦𝘆𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗺𝘀, several key insights were highlighted:

✅ Effective methane abatement starts with measurement
✅ MRV systems determine how well emissions are measured, tracked, and regulated. It is the foundation of credible methane mitigation
✅ Integrating top-down and bottom-up approaches, supported by stronger legal and enforcement frameworks, is essential to ensure accurate and reliable data
