Indonesia’s evolving Personal Data Protection framework continues to advance through ongoing national-level coordination and institutional preparation.

APPDI was honoured to participate in the national coordination meeting in Bogor concerning the transitional implementation framework of Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law, convened by the Coordinating Ministry for Political and Security Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia (Kemenko Polkam) on Thursday, 7 May 2026.

The meeting, led by Mr. Y. Syaiful Garyadi, Ak., M.M., CA, Assistant Deputy for Data Protection and Electronic Transactions Coordination, brought together representatives from government institutions, industry associations, financial services, telecommunications sectors, and other strategic stakeholders engaged in Indonesia’s broader data protection landscape.

Among the matters discussed were the latest developments concerning the Draft Government Regulation (RPP) under Indonesia’s Personal Data Protection Law and the Presidential Regulation relating to the establishment of the Personal Data Protection Authority, both of which remain under final consideration prior to formal enactment.

DPIAs in Malaysia are no longer simply “good to have.” They are fast emerging as a key measure of compliance under the PDPA—particularly in high-risk processing scenarios.

What was once considered optional is now increasingly recognised as a benchmark for responsible data governance. In the context of Section 108 PDPA, the absence of a DPIA may not constitute a direct breach—but it can indicate underlying systemic risks.

As regulators move toward a more preventive, risk-based approach, organisations are expected to demonstrate not only compliance, but operational readiness.
