Throwback to our Literature Study Group 📚

We discussed Winarta by Basuki Gunawan. The conversation covered topics of revenge, loss of humanity, dark humour and historical details of the Indonesian fight for independence and against communists.

We had the pleasure of having David Colmer, the book translator. The book was originally written in Dutch. David Colmer gave very good insight into the book because he is friends with Basuki Gunawan's granddaughter and once met the author.

From the ashes of Pajang, Mataram emerged under Senopati and rose to greatness with Sultan Agung—a ruler who challenged Dutch power and brought Javanese culture, art, and philosophy to new heights. 👑

But not all threats came from outside. Court rivalries fractured the kingdom, and in 1755, the Treaty of Giyanti split Mataram in two—marking the end of a powerful era.

Let's learn more about a story of ambition, brilliance, and a kingdom undone from within. ⚔️
