In a Single Day, Two Attempts to Smuggle Wild Animals Were Foiled at Two Ports in East Java.

On May 23, 2026, the Surabaya Quarantine successfully foiled an attempt to smuggle dozens of songbirds at Tanjung Perak Port in East Java. The birds were found in the passenger area without official documentation and with no known owner.

On the same day, another smuggling attempt was thwarted at Ketapang Port, East Java. Hundreds of wild birds without proper documentation were successfully seized by the East Java Quarantine Office and the Indonesian Navy as they were being smuggled from Bali to Banyuwangi, East Java, via a cargo truck.

The successful thwarting of these two cases in a single day demonstrates that maritime transport routes remain a target for illegal wildlife trade, while also underscoring the importance of oversight and interagency collaboration in preventing the circulation of illegal wildlife in Indonesia.

Sentences for Perpetrators of Illegal Sumatran Bird Trade Have Increased Over the Past Three Years

Good news from the courtroom! Over the past three years, law enforcement efforts against perpetrators of the illegal Sumatran bird trade have seen a significant increase.

From an average of 9 months in prison in 2023, to 13 months in 2024, and then surging dramatically to 30 months in prison in 2025.

The more than twofold increase in sentencing by 2025 sends a strong message to illegal bird traffickers that there is no longer any place for wildlife criminals, while also offering new hope for the protection of Indonesia’s wild birds so they can continue to live freely in their natural habitats.

FLIGHT deeply appreciates the firm actions taken by law enforcement officials and judges in Lampung in handling cases of illegal wild bird trafficking. The increased penalties are clear evidence that wildlife crimes are no longer taken lightly.

Harsher sentences not only serve as a deterrent for offenders but also provide tangible protection for the conservation of wild birds in the wild. Let us continue to monitor law enforcement to ensure the songs of wild birds continue to echo freely through the forests of the Indonesian archipelago.

In less than 24 hours, two attempts to smuggle birds illegally were successfully thwarted by officials at Gilimanuk Port and Padang Bai Port in Bali. This success once again highlights the prevalence of illegal wildlife trade, which threatens the survival of Indonesia’s wild birds.

On May 14, 2026, the Padang Bai Quarantine Office, the Padang Bai Natural Resources Conservation Agency (BKSDA), and the Denpasar Naval Base successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle thousands of songbirds at Padang Bai Port, Bali. The birds were found being transported in a bus originating from Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), without valid official documentation.

On the same day, a similar smuggling attempt was again successfully thwarted at Gilimanuk Port, Bali. Dozens of wild birds without official documentation were secured by the Gilimanuk Quarantine Office, the Gilimanuk BKSDA, and the Port Security Enforcement Unit (KP3) as they were about to be smuggled from Bali to Surabaya.

FLIGHT appreciates the solid cooperation and synergy among agencies in safeguarding transportation routes from illegal wildlife trade activities. This collaboration is a crucial step in strengthening oversight and preventing the continued smuggling of wildlife, which threatens the conservation of Indonesia’s biodiversity.

A total of 620 birds being transported illegally without official documentation on an interprovincial bus bound for Java Island were successfully rescued through a joint operation involving the Lampung Quarantine Agency, Bakauheni Port Police (KSKP), the Fleet One Quick Response Team (F1QR) of Lampung Naval Base, and FLIGHT Team.

The operation successfully prevented the wildlife from entering bird markets across Java. Following the rescue, a number of the birds have been released back into their natural habitat in collaboration with SKSDAW III Lampung BKSDA Bengkulu and UPTD KPHK Tahura Wan Abdul Rachman. The remaining birds are currently undergoing rehabilitation and will be released once they are deemed fit to return to the wild.

In the Wan Abdul Rachman Grand Forest Park (TAHURA WAR), the Joint Forest Patrol Team—consisting of UPTD KPHK TAHURA WAR, the Farmers Group Association (GAPOKTAN), and FLIGHT—remains fully dedicated to protecting the conservation area.

During the month of April, the team documented a number of findings related to illegal activities within the area. Some of the items were destroyed on-site, while others were seized as evidence for further legal action.

We will fully support all efforts made by the Patrol Team to take firm action against anyone involved in illegal activities within the TAHURA WAR forest area.
