ARTIST OF THE MONTH: SATYA CIPTA

Satya Cipta moves between painting, performance, and voice; shaping a practice rooted in both discipline and lived experience. Studied theatre at IKJ and later immersed in Balinese traditional painting, her work carries a strong sense of presence and embodiment.

Her paintings centre on the female figure as something lived; holding memory, pressure, and emotion at once. Working across Batuan, Sigar Mangsi, and Chinese ink wash, she shifts between density and openness, control and fluidity.

Often monochrome, her compositions are marked by a deliberate red; appearing on hands and feet, referencing both the expressive body and sacred gestures of offering.

Rather than resolving what she observes, Satya allows it to remain. The visible and the unseen, the controlled and the intuitive, existing in the same space, held without simplification.

Book Review Series: ‘Eyes of the Ancestors: The Arts of Island Southeast Asia’

In this series, we explore books that deepen our understanding of art and culture across the region.

This time, we turn to ‘Eyes of the Ancestors’ — a publication that brings together remarkable works from the Dallas Museum of Art’s renowned collection of Island Southeast Asian art. Through rich photography and insightful texts, the book reveals the cultural depth of Indonesia, Malaysia, and East Timor, showcasing traditions expressed through textiles, sculpture, and metalwork.

What makes this book compelling is how it helps us see these objects beyond their beauty — as reflections of belief systems, social identity, and ancestral knowledge passed down through generations.

A thoughtful read for anyone who wants to explore the cultural stories woven into Southeast Asian art.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: MADE KAEK

Made Kaek is a Balinese artist whose practice moves quietly between intuition, memory, and the subconscious. Rather than offering fixed narratives, his works invite us into a world where figures remain open—hovering between human, creature, and something unnamed.

Through cryptic beings, layered materials, and an instinctive way of working, Made Kaek creates spaces for reflection rather than explanation. His paintings ask us not to understand too quickly, but to stay with what feels uncertain, unfamiliar, and deeply human.

Makan di Ruang Tengah
A Still-Life Photography Exhibition by Ade Ardhana

Presented by Seta Coffee LibraryIn ‘Makan di Ruang Tengah’, Ade Ardhana approaches still-life photography not as documentation, but as a way of shaping space. Objects, colors, and light are carefully arranged to create quiet encounters—where food becomes more than nourishment, and everyday materials begin to carry memory, rhythm, and presence.

Rather than emphasizing function or perfection, the photographs invite viewers to slow down and notice the subtle relationships between form, distance, and atmosphere. The compositions feel deliberate yet intimate, transforming the familiar into something contemplative and quietly charged.

Set within the architectural environment of Seta Coffee Library, the exhibition blurs the boundary between image and space—suggesting that seeing, tasting, and inhabiting can be part of the same sensory experience.

SPACE OF THE MONTH: SIKA GALLERY

In the heart of Sanggingan stands SIKA Gallery, a contemporary art space founded in 1996 by the late Balinese artist I Wayan Sika. From the beginning, it was envisioned as more than an exhibition venue — but as a platform for emerging artists, experimentation, and the evolving language of contemporary art in Bali.

Today, the gallery is led by his son, I Made Aswino Aji, an ISI Jogja graduate who continues the legacy while shaping its next chapter. Beyond Ubud, Aji was also involved in initiating Art Bali (2018–2019), a major contemporary art exhibition in Nusa Dua that aimed to position Bali not only as a tourism destination, but as a serious hub for contemporary art.

Now, Aji is focusing on strengthening SIKA Gallery as a dynamic contemporary art space in Ubud — supporting young artists, expanding programs like Artistry (their annual craft-focused exhibition), and building a bridge between fine art, craft, and new creative voices.

Within the same compound, you’ll also find Defvto, a printmaking studio that brings process into the space — reinforcing SIKA not only as a gallery for finished works, but as a living environment where ideas are developed and produced.

More than a gallery, SIKA is a tucked-away creative compound — with rotating exhibitions, an art shop, and a small coffee shop worth lingering in.

ARTIST OF THE MONTH: DANIEL KHO

Daniel Kho is an internationally recognised artist based in Bali, with a distinctly contemporary Indonesian voice. His iconography reflects an infinitely creative universal life force, expressed through a dynamic language of colors and forms.

Through colors that glow with cosmic energy and figures that bridge myth and imagination, Daniel Kho reminds us that art is not only a mirror of culture but also a joyful pathway to connect with the universe.

Surrounded by the rich cultural spirit of Batuan, the studio offers not only technical training but also insights into the spiritual and philosophical essence of Balinese art

Jatiluwih, A Beauty Interrupted
A Solo Exhibition by Putu PW Winata

In this exhibition, Putu PW Winata looks beyond the postcard beauty of Jatiluwih and reveals the layered realities beneath its celebrated landscape. Through abstract forms and raw materials, his works reflect the fragile balance between nature, community, and the pressures of modern development.

Rather than offering simple answers, the exhibition encourages us to pause and reconsider how we relate to cultural heritage—reminding us that places like Jatiluwih are not just scenery to admire, but living systems shaped by people, history, and ongoing change.

Both poetic and critical, ‘Jatiluwih, A Beauty Interrupted’ invites viewers to witness the tensions behind beauty and to reflect on the responsibilities that come with preserving it.

SPACE OF THE MONTH: LANÖ CONTEMPORARY ART GALLERY

In a time when contemporary Balinese art continues to question its relationship with tradition, Lanö Contemporary Art Gallery arrives as a new platform dedicated to that very conversation. Founded by artist Kemalezedine, the space officially opened on 29 January 2025, marking the evolution of an earlier initiative, Lanö Art Project, into a permanent gallery environment.

At the core of Lanö’s vision is the discourse of post-tradition — an idea that reflects how artists in Bali navigate heritage not as something fixed, but as something continually interpreted, challenged, and reimagined. Through exhibitions and discussions, the gallery positions itself as a site for critical thinking, where contemporary practices engage with cultural memory while responding to the realities of the present.

Rather than focusing solely on presentation, Lanö emphasizes dialogue. It invites artists and audiences to participate in ongoing conversations about identity, context, and the role of Balinese art within the wider Indonesian contemporary art landscape. In doing so, the gallery contributes to a growing ecosystem in Ubud where ideas are as central as the artworks themselves.

As one of the newest additions to the local scene, Lanö represents a generation of spaces that see art not only as expression, but as inquiry — a place where tradition becomes material for reflection, and the future of Balinese art is actively negotiated.
