Seagrass may grow quietly beneath the surface, but it supports climate stability, coastal protection, fisheries, and the survival of dugongs.

Through its Dugong and Seagrass conservation efforts, ATSEA works with partners to strengthen the protection of these critical habitats across the region.

🌿 Because what grows underwater shapes life above.

On 19 January 2026, two dugongs were found stranded along the coast of Pukuafu Village, Rote Ndao District, East Nusa Tenggara, based on information from the Kupang Ocean Management Office (Balai Pengelolaan Kelautan Kupang), Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries.

Dugongs are protected marine mammals, and strandings can happen for various natural and environmental reasons. Events like this remind us why public awareness on marine mammal protection and proper stranding response is important, especially in coastal communities.

As part of its upcoming work in Rote Ndao, ATSEA will be supporting efforts related to dugong and seagrass conservation, including community awareness and knowledge sharing to help strengthen long-term protection of these important species and habitats.
