At recent meetings with local Education Departments, we had the opportunity to present the Zero Waste School Program and explore pathways for collaboration.

📍 Photo 1: Meeting with I Wayan Mawa, Head of the Education Department of Gianyar Regency
📍 Photo 2: Meeting with I Made Sukanitra, Head of Elementary School Development at the Education Department of Tabanan Regency

We are grateful to have open doors at Education Departments across Bali - including Badung, Denpasar, Gianyar, and Tabanan. This is an important step toward scaling the Zero Waste School Program across the island and reducing pollution at its source.

At the same time, there is currently no government funding available for such waste management programs in schools.

That’s why we are inviting corporate and private sponsors to be part of this journey - helping schools to reduce single-use plastic consumption and minimize waste sent to landfills, both critical challenges in Bali’s development today.

If you’re interested in supporting or collaborating, we’d love to connect.

👍👍 Thumbs up for reusable foodware in school canteens!

During our baseline waste audits, we often find that most single-use plastic in schools comes from the canteen.

That’s why, through the Zero Waste School Program, we work closely with canteen staff—providing training, organizing study visits to role model canteens, and showing that it’s possible to run a profitable business without single-use plastics.

We also support them with reusable foodware like cups, trays, bowls, and containers, so they can serve food and drinks without single-use plastic. 💚

Small changes in the canteen can make a big impact in reducing waste.

After 10 years of R&D, Yayasan Green Books launched the revolutionary Zero Waste School Program - Indonesia’s most impactful and comprehensive waste management program for elementary schools, reducing single-use plastic consumption by 81.34% and cutting residual waste sent to landfills by 86.66%. 💪

The Zero Waste School Program combines hands-on learning experiences and practical changes to school infrastructure. Aligned with the national curriculum, it’s designed to work in any elementary school in Indonesia 🇮🇩

📚 In the 12-lesson curriculum, students learn in a fun and engaging way about the causes and consequences of plastic pollution. The program inspires them to reduce single-use plastics and improve their waste separation skills.

♻️ To foster lasting changes in schoolchildren’s waste management habits, the program includes:
• Establishing single-use plastic-free canteens
• Implementing a waste separation bin system
• Connecting schools with waste banks for recycling
• Setting up composting facilities to manage organic waste effectively

🎯 Our goal is clear: to transform schoolchildren’s waste management habits, creating lifelong change. Together, we’re working toward zero waste to landfills!

💚 Support the Zero Waste School Program and help us build a cleaner, greener, and healthier Indonesia – for our children and generations to come.

Thank you, (BRCA - Bali Restaurant and Café Association), for the opportunity to share how Bali restaurants can transform used cooking oil into Zero Waste education for local schools—creating real impact in their communities. 🌱

Special thanks to , and for connecting us with the BRCA, and to Pak Pande from for hosting the gathering.

We look forward to partnering with BRCA restaurants and cafés to turn waste into education - reducing single-use plastics and waste to landfill, one school at a time. ♻️🌏

The study trip to our role-model school, , marks the intersection of the educational and eco-infrastructure components of the Zero Waste School Program. ♻️🌱

School principals, teachers, and canteen staff from SDN 6 Pedungan, SDN 2 Peguyangan, , , SD No.1 Canggu, and came together to learn from real-life best practices.

Participants shared their challenges and discussed practical solutions for implementing the Zero Waste School Program — with a special focus on single-use-plastic–free school canteens.

The session was attended by Pak Yudha from the Denpasar Education Department, and guest speaker Anggita from .id, who introduced the concept of single-use-plastic-free snacks.

And of course, the refreshments were SUP-free, prepared by the wonderful canteen vendor Ibu Dwi from SDN 11 Kesiman. 🙌

😲 This is the amount of waste generated in just one day at SDN 6 Pedungan, Denpasar - an elementary school with 399 students and 2 canteens - at the pre-program stage of our Zero Waste School Program.

To create real impact, we first need to measure it. That’s why every Zero Waste School Program begins with a baseline waste audit. This allows us to compare results with a post-program audit later — and see the transformation in real, measurable numbers.

During the audit, we counted every single piece of single-use plastic, checked waste separation rates, and weighed how much waste was sent to landfill.

📉 In just one day, the school produced:

😓 884 pieces of single-use plastic (5.03 kg)

😢 16.05 kg of waste sent to landfill

This is our starting point — and the foundation for meaningful change, reducing single-use plastic consumption and waste sent to landfill.

💚 Massive thanks to for supporting the Zero Waste School Program at SDN 6 Pedungan.

✨ Thank you .bali! ✨
Your support made it possible for the Zero Waste School Program at SDN 1 Darmasaba to empower 146 amazing students to start reducing single-use plastics and cutting waste going to landfill! ♻️🌱

How we made it happen:

✅ Teachers trained for 2 days (photo 1)

✅ Teachers delivered a 12-lesson hands-on sustainability curriculum to their students (photos 2-6)

✅ Teachers received reusable zero-waste lunch kits (photo 7)

✅ The school canteen was equipped with reusable foodware (photo 8)

✅ A waste separation system (organic, recyclables, residual) was introduced (photo 9)

✅ Two Teba Modern vertical composting units were installed to turn organic waste into compost (photo 10)

During the baseline assessment, the school was producing 12.49 kg of waste to landfill per day, including 707 pieces of single-use plastic daily. Thanks to education and improved infrastructure, we aim to reduce both by over 80%, which will be measured next semester! 🙌

Together, we’re building Zero Waste schools, greener communities, and a better future for Bali. 🌏✨

Part of creating real change in waste management is not just telling students what to do - but making it easy and practical for them to do it. That’s why, alongside education, we upgrade school infrastructure to support long-term behavior change.

Recently, we delivered 37 water filter units to 6 elementary schools in Denpasar, serving 1,958 students - giving them access to clean drinking water and making it easy to refill their reusable tumblers instead of buying single-use plastic cups or bottles. These water filters were proudly fabricated by our friends at 💧

Recently, we organized a visit for students from SDN 14 Dauh Puri to see one of the river barriers installed by our friends .

The students witnessed firsthand how polluted our rivers can become - and how Sungai Watch works to clean them. This eye-opening experience perfectly complements our Single-Use Plastic Free Schools Program, following the Plastic Cycle Poster activity where students learn how single-use plastics travel from everyday purchases to waterways, oceans, and even back to us through the food chain.

Last week we had the pleasure of delivering a workshop for the amazing team at !

The session focused on reducing single-use plastics — the first step toward proper waste management. Through fun, hands-on activities, the staff explored the causes and consequences of plastic pollution, learned practical ways to cut down on single-use items in their daily lives, and brainstormed creative solutions to reduce plastic in their workplace.

A heartfelt thank you to Co-founder & Business Director Virginia Entizne and HR Manager Erika Ayu Wulandari for the opportunity to collaborate. We’re excited to partner with Cuca Bali to bring our flagship Zero Waste School Program to schools in Jimbaran and beyond! 💚
