🇬🇧Menjangan Island is an uninhabited island located in the conservation area of West Bali National Park.

Menjangan Island is also a valuable tourist destination for diving and snorkeling and also a popular destination for pilgrimage (Tirta Yatra) for Balinese Hindus who travel to Menjangan by chartered boats from Labuan Lalang harbor.

In a feasibility study conducted between 2017-2018 Biosphere Foundation determined that plastics which pollute the waters and shorelines of Menjangan Island originate from different sources.

1). several identified rivers which originate upstream from the Pemutaran Bay

2). villages located along the shorelines of the Pemutaran Bay

3). fisherman , mostly from Java

4). Tirta Yatra visitors traveling on charter boats from the harbor of Labuan Lalang

5). charter boats carrying dive tourists from accommodation

6). sources on Java and get carried to Bali by currents

More research is needed to monitor marine debris to determine best intervention to prevent further plastic pollution.

Excellent Report by our friends at Sungai Watch .
For three years in a row, the Sungai Watch Brand Audit established Aqua as the Number 1 Top Polluter in Bali!
🥇Bali’s Top Polluting Brand 2022
🥇Bali’s Top Polluting Brand 2021
🥇Bali’s Top Polluting Brand 2020

The Sungai Watch Brand Audit determined that single-use cups (gelas)represented 68% of all packaging collected and 16% were Danone Aqua.

Even though Danone Aqua claims that 50% of their products are sold in 19 liter Refillable bottles (galon), their brand is Number One in the category of Single-Use PET bottles.

Global Brand Audits reported by determined that Danone is the top polluting brand nationwide in Indonesia.

We hope that is serious about reducing their pollution in Indonesia. They have not discontinued the Danone Aqua cup and small size PET bottles under one liter. Size counts! Given the low rate of access to waste management in Indonesia, small single-use plastic cups and small PET bottles are not as likely to be collected as bottles over one liter size and these small plastic containers are more likely to become plastic pollution.
Danone, you must do better in Indonesia.

Sacred , the protectors of life. A piece of happy news from to start off the week. 🐝🌳🐝🌿🐝

Je’chu, a god, first created bees so that their wax would cure the world. So goes the spiritual testament of the Yucuna Indigenous peoples of Colombia.

“He is our god and creator — our grandfather,” narrates Carmenza Yucuna Rivas, leader of the Miriti-Parana Indigenous Reserve in Colombia, located in the Amazon Rainforest. “And he created bees because there had to be a species protecting life.”

Therefore, during rituals, elders take a small piece of the beehive and, with the permission of its tiny inhabitants, they conjure an invocation over it. They then light it on fire so the emerging smoke blowing in the wind covers humanity, protecting us and helping us live well. This smoke is a sign of the harmony and peace that keeps nature balanced, according to their religious beliefs.

“Wind is the biggest connection between the beehive and nature, as it helps expand this knowledge and wisdom,” says Carmenza. “Beehives also help regulate the climate, drive sickness away, give us the opportunity to create chakras [food gardens typically using an agroforestry model with diverse plant species] and make them productive. They let us have something to cultivate or extract from nature in the first place.”

To rescue and document the remaining oral knowledge of the origin of bees in their culture and their importance to their ecosystems and territory, Carmenza is leading research about these species with 36 women from the 12 communities part of the Indigenous reserve. With the help of nine elders, they are documenting and sketching tales and songs to gather bee names, characteristics, behaviors, roles in their crop fields and the places where bees build beehives.

The reason our non-stick pans impart miraculous properties is because they are coated with , (Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). PFAS are used to impart resistance to grease, moisture, stains, fire and heat for many types of products other than non-stick pans.

PFAS have long-lasting negative impacts on the environment and human health and have earned the nickname, “Forever Chemicals” because they never go away in the environment. Some PFAS can bioaccumulate in our bodies, raising risks of . PFAS can migrate into our water, soil, food and bodies from many sources. For instance our seemingly safe paper straws, ‘compostable’ paper and molded fiber packaging, our microwaveable and grease-proof paper, our water-, stain-, oil- and fire-resistant textiles including baby clothes, water-resistant outerwear, yoga wear, mattresses, stain-resistant carpets and upholstery and our non-stick pans!

I used to avoid all non-stick cookware but then the “ceramic coated non-stick” pans came on the market and I was tempted and bought some. Truth be told, ceramic-coated non-stick pans aren’t necessarily “PFAS-FREE” because the ceramic coating can still contain fluorinated chemicals. Read more from .

Your Teflon pan sheds millions of microplastics loaded with PFAS during cooking – even when it’s brand new!

Groundbreaking new study by researchers at the , discovered hidden hazards in the Teflon pans millions of families use to cook food for their children.

Try safer alternatives like cast iron, stainless steel, or carbon steel.

Mine and team first reaction to the news that fast fashion brand (famously in breach of human rights and found using slave labour even in the UK) hired to be their SUSTAINABILITY ambassador - was a loud and incredulous WTF.

Then fortunately a quick scroll at the reaction of the press and social media reassured us we were not alone. I can’t write an essay on IG about why every single part of this “collaboration” is totally morally wrong. BUT in our group of experts including Auret Van Herdeen .ward The Geneva Institute for Business and Human Rights and we all started to discuss WHAT do we do when fast fashion brands are starting to GREENWASH at this level? from to latest disturbing initiatives - this is the time to truly raise the bar and we will! But one can’t avoid but wonder: are so called consumers totally indifferent to being part of the environmental destruction and social exploitation while they keep buying fast and furiously just because a cheap bargain that lasts few wears is more important? Please distribute wide and far and let me know the answer …..

Thank you to for this deep dive into the aggregate risks from exposure to the most common , polyethylene terephthalate or and , in its fiber form.

Problem Plastic: How Polyester and PET Plastic Can be Unsafe, Unjust, and Unsustainable Materials.

No time to waste.
Here’s the Timeline for the Action Plan

• By 2023, end all use of antimony and cobalt

• By 2024, eliminate chemicals of high concern as PET plastic additives and processing aids

• By 2025, assess the hazards of all chemical substances used or produced to make PET

• By 2025, meet the industry pledge to eliminate unnecessary and problematic plastic materials (e.g. opaque or pigmented PET plastic bottles, and PETG in rigid packaging)

• By 2025, meet the industry’s Recycled Polyester Challenge to increase the recycled content of polyester to 45% (on the path toward achieving a 90% share by 2030)

• By 2030, replace 50% of PET bottles and packaging with reusable and refillable systems

• By 2030, substitute 50% of virgin polyester with recycled clothing or natural fibers

• By 2030, replace 50% of PET with 100% non-toxic biobased PET or bioplastics such as PEF

• By 2040, the use of virgin fossil PET plastic and polyester should be phased out

Discussed in the full report:

• Compounds of and , which are known to cause and organ toxicity are commonly used as catalysts or additives in and often escape from PET products resulting in human exposure from consuming beverages in plastic bottles and when teething toddlers suck and chew on polyester cuddly toys, blankets, and clothing.

• Potentially safer alternatives to antimony catalysts are widely available, effective, and affordable.

• Among several other , ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane 32, are routinely emitted into the air and discharged as waste from PET-related chemical manufacturing plants, which often disproportionately impact nearby communities of color and lower-income residents.

• A building block chemical used to make PET plastic, , is a reproductive that can harm development of a fetus or baby if pregnant chemical workers or fenceline community residents are exposed

Aggregate Risk From Total Exposure
Antimony is added to many other plastic products, including electronics and home furnishings, to enhance the effect of flame retardant chemicals. Those products can release antimony in the home, which builds up in house dust. Toddlers may then ingest household dust containing antimony from frequent hand-to-mouth activity. We calculate that young children are likely exposed to almost three times as much antimony per bodyweight as adults in the U.S.

fiber accounts for two-thirds of all PET production.

90% of all PET still ends up as plastic waste that’s landfilled, burned, or discarded onto land and water.

15/07/2022

On July 10th, Ocean Conservancy rescinded their 2015 report, “Stemming the Tide” with an apology and Statement of Accountability.

“Stemming the Tide” framed the global plastic crisis as a problem caused by a handful of countries, including Indonesia, and this false narrative led to years of misguided recommendations to fix plastic pollution with waste management solutions, including incineration and RDF.

Ocean Conservancy admitted their investigation was wrong to advise for incineration and waste to energy (including ) as solutions for the ocean plastic crisis. They also admitted their narrative about who is responsible for the ocean plastic pollution crisis was wrong. They focused on countries in Asia and South East Asia and failed to look at the “outsized” role of developed countries who generate and export waste to these regions. Ocean Conservancy also admitted they failed to examine the root causes and challenges faced by NGOs on the ground.

This is a pivotal moment in time.

The knowledge partners for Stemming the Tide have not apologized nor admitted flaws in their research approach or that the report’s narrative did any harm while bringing financial benefits for the plastic industry.

This article by Pulitzer prize winner, Hiroko Tabuchi, appeared in the on Sunday. Read it (link in my bio), you may find some of your fondest sustainability beliefs do not hold the moral highground after all. "There’s data scarcity problem that really needs to be solved". Until it is, stop claiming one generic type of fibre is more sustainable than another. Nobody knows.
