18 March 2026.
Today is a very special day here in Bali — the final day in the Balinese calendar year, as the island prepares to enter Nyepi, the sacred Day of Silence which falls tomorrow.
Over the past few days in the run up to Nyepi, we have witnessed here in Bali, the beauty of the Melasti ceremonies, with communities gathering at the ocean to purify sacred objects and symbolically cleanse the past year. Across villages and homes, Mecaru ceremonies have also been taken place, humble yet powerful offerings made to restore balance between humanity, nature, and the unseen forces that shape our world.
Today, the day before Nyepi, is known as Tawur Agung Kesanga — a deeply spiritual time of prayer, reflection, and offering. It is a day where the Balinese people collectively seek harmony and ask for protection — not only for themselves, but for the entire world and all living beings. In a time where so much of the world feels uncertain, and as we witness suffering and tragedy in different parts of the globe, this intention feels especially meaningful. It is a moment where Bali pauses to pray for peace, for balance, and for the safety of all the world's peoples, and all living things
As the sun sets tonight, the island comes alive briefly with the powerful Ogoh-Ogoh processions — huge monster effigies, paraded through the streets of every town & village, representations of negative energies, before everything transitions into stillness.
And then tomorrow… silence.
For 24 hours, Bali stops. No travel, no work, no lights, no noise. It is a day devoted entirely to reflection, self-discipline, and inner peace. Even the skies fall quiet, the airport is closed. It is perhaps the most extraordinary collective act of mindfulness anywhere in the world.
For those of us who are fortunate to be in Bali — and for our friends around the world who are also observing Nyepi — this is more than a cultural tradition. It is a reminder. A reminder to slow down. To reflect on the year that has passed. To let go of what no longer serves us. And to begin again with clarity, compassion, and intention.
From all of us at the Global Village Foundation, we send our love & our most sincere wishes to everyone marking this sacred time, here in Bali and across the world.
May this Nyepi bring peace to your heart, stillness to your mind, and hope for the year ahead.🙏🙏🙏
