In Bantaeng, South Sulawesi, farmer Marni decided to stop planting maize on her small plot and shift to growing coffee under trees. On 2-3 hectares, she now cultivates arabica coffee together with jackfruit, mahogany and other shade species. The change has improved her income, allowing her to build a new house and support her childrenβs education.
Marni is part of the Akar Tani Cooperative, where hundreds of smallholders work together to improve coffee quality and reach better markets. By planting trees instead of clearing land, they are reducing the risk of fires and protecting nearby forests while keeping their farms productive.
