In Bantaeng, South Sulawesi, farmer Marni decided to stop planting maize on her small plot and shift to growing coffee under trees. On 2-3 hectares, she now cultivates arabica coffee together with jackfruit, mahogany and other shade species. The change has improved her income, allowing her to build a new house and support her children’s education.

Marni is part of the Akar Tani Cooperative, where hundreds of smallholders work together to improve coffee quality and reach better markets. By planting trees instead of clearing land, they are reducing the risk of fires and protecting nearby forests while keeping their farms productive.

Smallholder farmers produce more than 90 per cent of Indonesia’s 2.1 million tonnes of rubber each year. Many of them face unstable prices and degraded soils after years of monoculture. To adapt, farmers are starting to combine rubber with food crops and native tree species on the same land.

These mixed systems help families earn from several sources, strengthen local food security and rebuild soil health. Research shows that agroforestry systems store more carbon than monoculture plantations while keeping farms productive. On one hectare, farmers can now grow food, earn a stable income and protect the environment.

Indigenous Peoples have been stewards of forests for generations, yet they often face exclusion and inequity in carbon markets. Without their participation, conservation efforts risk overlooking the expertise of those most intimately connected to these vital ecosystems.

Across Asia-Pacific, we are empowering Indigenous leaders with essential tools and knowledge. By safeguarding their rights, we can foster sustainable carbon markets that benefit communities and the environment.

Happy ! 🌎 Healthy forests are essential for food security.

When local communities manage their forests, they protect vital sources of food, medicine and clean water. They also safeguard the very foundations of agriculture by improving soil fertility, controlling erosion and creating stable microclimates for crops.

Just look at the amazing results:

🌿In Thailand, the Ban Sa Si Mum community forest serves as a local hub for food, medicinal resources and forest education, ensuring food security and preserving traditional knowledge.

🌿In Indonesia, coffee farmers who integrate shade trees into their farms see higher yields and help protect vital watersheds.

🌿In Viet Nam, restoring mangrove forests on shrimp farms has increased local incomes and protects coastlines from climate impacts.

These community-led solutions show a powerful way forward, creating a world where both people and forests can thrive.
