First week of forest school, 2026
Forest school begins with mom.

During this phase, baby orangutans learn by watching what’s safe to eat, where to move, and how to survive in the wild.

Slow days, important lessons.

Rain falls, the forest slows down. Orangutans chill in the canopy, make quick nests, or grab a leaf as a natural umbrella.

No rush they wait until it’s safe to move again. Smart, calm, and perfectly in tune with the rainforest.

The Story of Oca & Oci: From the Wild to Jerora Forest School

Oca was found alone in the forest of Sayan, Ketapang Regency. Locals took her in with kindness, keeping her safe until the rescue team from WRU BKSDA West Kalimantan and Sintang Orangutan Center arrived on January 20, 2025.

Around the same time, Oci a young orangutan that kept as a pet in Melawi Regency was handed over to the same team a day later, weak and suffering from malnutrition. With time, care, and lots of patience, she slowly regained her strength.

Both Oca and Oci are now healthy and thriving at Jerora Forest School, where they learn how to be wild again climbing trees, finding natural food, and sharpening their survival instincts.

On Friday, October 17, 2025, a joint team from RKW Putussibau Badau, Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum National Park (TNBKDS), together with the Sintang Orangutan Center (SOC), successfully evacuated a wild orangutan in Suai Hamlet, Melapi Village, North Putussibau District.

Earlier, local residents had reported sightings of a wild orangutan near farms and settlements. In response to these reports, the team conducted community outreach and field observations before carrying out the evacuation on October 18, 2025. The process was quite challenging, as the orangutan was high in the tree canopy with dense branches, requiring the team to dart it very carefully to ensure the safety of both the orangutan and the rescuers.

After the evacuation, the orangutan was taken to the RKW Putussibau Badau Office for a brief health check before being translocated on October 19, 2025, to the Jepala Lala Release Site in the Mendalam River area, part of Betung Kerihun National Park. There, the orangutan was released back into its natural habitat, far from human activity.

The West Kalimantan BKSDA, the Betung Kerihun and Danau Sentarum National Park Authority, and the Sintang Orangutan Center would like to express their gratitude to the Melapi Village Government and the people of Suai Hamlet for their full support and cooperation during the evacuation, translocation, and release process.

This action represented a shared commitment to protecting wildlife and preserving the ecological balance of West Kalimantan’s forests. 🌿🦧

Lil’ Piet’s on his solo adventure again, He might move a bit slow, but that’s just his style calm, curious, and always ready to explore every branch.

At Jerora Forest School, Piet’s learning to recognize natural foods from young leaves to forest fruits.

Si kecil Piet lagi berpetualang sendiri lagi nih! Jalannya mungkin agak lambat, tapi emang itu gayanya — santai, penasaran, dan selalu siap menjelajahi setiap dahan.

Di Jerora Forest School, Piet lagi belajar mengenali makanan alami, mulai dari daun muda sampai buah-buahan hutan.

Meet Redi a 3-year-old orangutan with wild dreams. Rescued from the illegal wildlife trade, he’s been leveling up at Jerora Forest School for almost a year now. Smart, curious, and super independent (plus he never skips a meal) Redi’s learning what it really means to live free.

_

Artemis knows that learning is important, but so is rest!
At Jerora Forest School, orangutans practice essential forest skills by day and take peaceful naps in between. Because in nature, balance is the key to survival.

____
