Did you know that October is Tamaraw Month?🐃

Every October, the Philippines celebrates the conservation and protection of the Tamaraw (Bubalus mindorensis), a critically endangered species found only on Mindoro and a proud symbol of the nation’s natural and cultural heritage.

This year’s theme, “Sama-Samang Pagyamanin: Tamaraw, Buhay-Ilang at Kultura Natin,” reminds us that protecting the Tamaraw is about more than saving a species, it’s about safeguarding our wildlife, our culture, and our shared future. 🌿✨

📰 New research in PNAS highlights how small islands in Wallacea may safeguard species like the anoa.

Island populations show lower diversity but fewer harmful mutations than mainland counterparts, likely via purging in isolation. With better-protected habitats, these islands may be key refuges for endemics.
