Batu Kapal Conservation Sanctuary and Volunteering Join us on a jungle adventure to protect the habitat of the endangered Orangutan, elephants & tigers Batu Kapal Conservation Program goals are to:
1.

Our aim is to protect and conserve the rare and endangered native fauna and flora that occurs in this Wildlife Biolink at Batu Kapal which adjoins the Gunung Leuser NP in North Sumatra. Surveying, mapping and monitoring the area, habitats and animals with GPS. To identify existing landholdings, there primary land use and the extant native vegetation.
2. To map orangutan habitation and food forage

areas. To map known orangutan movement pathways with GPS.
3. To develop a full species list for fauna and flora. To identify the ecosystem service provided by each subject. With a view to developing a better understanding of what is missing. To establish recovery programmes for threatened and vulnerable species.
4. Create wildlife corridors to reconnect orangutan and animal habitats between the national park and the nature buffer zone on private lands as per the project plan
5. Develop best practice ecotourism activities which have minimum impact on the surrounding environment

Recent videos from children’s football clinic in the nearby village! Supporting community initiatives like football encourages the local kids to come together, spend time outside, and also practice english when our volunteers join! Conservation is more than just monitoring wildlife, it’s about engaging and supporting the neighboring communities.

Here are a few of the lunches our team serves our volunteers throughout the week! 🍜

🍚 At the project site, we serve a mostly vegan diet and we eat together buffet style like a family. As a conservation site, we try to subscribe to a diet with lower environmental impact.

🇮🇩 At the same time, we also follow a traditional Indonesian cousins including dishes like nasi goreng, rendang or noodles soup.

So by joining our volunteer program, you not only get immersed into conservation, but you also have the opportunity to dive into local cuisine and culture!

Planting and maintaining trees that are planted for the purpose of reforestation in a major job that is done by our staff and volunteers! After investing a year or more raising each tree in our nursery, it is important that we do what we can to increase their rate of survival once they are planted in the ground!

One other primate that you can spot on our project site is the Silver Leaf Monkey 🐒

Compared to other species that rely heavily on fruit, these monkeys survives mostly on young leaves from trees such as ficus or liana. They live in small groups and communicate quietly, creating a peaceful rhythm in the jungle.

Silver leaf moneys are quite shy and often on alert when we are out monitoring, but we are lucky to see them quite often and have the opportunity to monitor them as well as the orangutans.

🌱Tree nursery tour with our project manager Santa!

On our site we keep a tree nursery where we grow non-fruiting and fruiting trees such as avocado, mangosteen and durian🥑

With the help of our volunteers, we plant the these trees across our wildlife corridors to serve as food and transport for our orangutans 🦧

Additionally, we also plant them on local farming land to compensate farmers for the fruit the primates will inevitably consume.

It’s time for market class! Did you prepare your lesson? 👩‍🏫
We’re proud to support free English classes for the children living in Bukit Lawang. At Batu Kapal, we believe that community is essential to protecting nature. These classes help by teaching children skills, confidence, and care for their home and jungle together.

For the volunteers, these classes offer an opportunity to connect with the community and gain hands on experience in teaching. 🤝

We hope everyone who celebrates had a lovely holiday this week! As we approach the new year, we are hoping to celebrate acquiring a new, very important piece of land for elephant conservation!

With only ~1,200 individuals remaining, Sumatran elephants need all the help they can get, and we are committed to doing our part!

Help us achieve this goal by donating to our current fundraiser! Check out the link:

This holiday we are asking you to help us secure a wildlife corridor for wild Sumatran elephants 🐘This wildlife corridor is really important because it allows the elephants (and other animals living in the area such as tigers and sunbears 🐅) to travel safely through the private land without encountering conflict.

We just need one more piece of land to finish the corridor connection and we need your help to do it. It is urgent that we act quickly to ensure this land does not get developed as it is prime habitat for various endemic sumatran species. 🌳

This video was taken with one of our trail cameras we set up in this area to monitor wildlife and assess how they are using the land.

Donate to the cause by using the link in our bio!

Suri, spending the day foraging in a fruiting ficus tree!

Ficus trees are critically important for orangutans in Sumatra, both ecologically and nutritionally.

🌳 Important Food Source

Did you know ficus trees fruit year-round? Unlike many tropical trees that fruit seasonally, ficus trees produce fruit continuously or at different times, making them a reliable food source when other fruits are scarce.

Ficus availability can affect orangutan reproductive success, health, and ability to raise young.

🌍 Keystone Ecological Role
Ficus trees are considered keystone species in tropical forests, meaning they support a wide range of wildlife.
Besides orangutans, birds, bats, monkeys, and insects also feed on their fruits. This makes ficus trees crucial for maintaining biodiversity in Sumatran rainforests.

🪹 Habitat & Nesting
Orangutans build nests in the canopy to sleep in each night. Ficus trees, with their broad canopies and sturdy branches, often provide ideal nesting sites.

Ficus trees are a lifeline for orangutans in Sumatra, providing critical food, nesting, and ecological support.

We are lucky to have many ficus trees in the area where we monitor orangutans and our team is working hard to ensure they are protected as they are vital to the long-term survival of the orangutans in the area.

Road maintenance is an activity our volunteers participate in each week. Due to heavy rains, many of the stones in the road are washed away, making it a slippery and dangerous path for the individuals that have to drive on it for work or to access their homes. Once a week our volunteers work to fix areas of the road to make it a little bit safer for the neighboring community (and for us, since we use it to get to and from our project site!)
