📣We are recruiting!🗣🔊

This is also one of the bigger horseshoe crabs we’ve found. It’s important to hold them by their carapace/shells like this, because they’re sturdy!
Holding them by their tails can cause breakage or damage to the tail which they need to flip themselves over!

After 7 long months, our fieldwork has finally drawn to a close. The team compiled preliminary results from our activities and presented them to several key stakeholders, such as BKSDA (Balai Konservasi Sumberdaya Alam - Nature Conservation Agency) Seksi Konservasi Wilayah III Balikpapan, Dewan Perlindungan Mangrove dan Laut Teritip (Mangrove and Ocean Protection Agency of Teritip), Dinas Pangan Pertanian dan Perikanan Balikpapan, and local fishers groups. In addition to presenting our findings, we also provided recommendations, conducted stakeholder mapping sessions, and discussed the interests and roles of each stakeholder in horseshoe crab conservation. As it turns out, our discussions show that horseshoe crabs can be found in numerous places throughout East Kalimantan. We hope our project can be a stepping stone to further discover the presence of the living fossils and the importance of East Kalimantan as their habitat.

Ghost nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost or discarded (ALD), at sea, on beaches or in harbours. We found this one entangled in the mangrove forests where we regularly conduct ecology surveys to find horseshoe crabs. Much like other forms of plastic debris, ghost nets can be hazardous to the marine environment. We try our best to help keep the mangrove forest clean by picking up after ghost nets like these and properly disposing them.

The 26th of July 2015 was proclaimed as the international mangrove day by UNESCO (The United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).

The existence of mangrove ecosystems plays an important role for the continuity of ecological and hydrological processes. It helps stabilize coastline ecosystem, provide natural infrastructure and protection to nearby populated areas by preventing erosion and absorbing storm surge impacts during extreme weather events such as hurricanes, it also plays a role as a habitat for many organism included Horseshoe Crab.

Our team visited several more local elementary schools as part of our initiative to engage locals in conserving horseshoe crabs. Much like the students we met before, many students often encounter horseshoe crabs in nearby beaches but they have no clue whatsoever what these animals are! Seeing the children laugh and learn together about our beloved horseshoe crabs is one of our favorite parts of fieldwork.

IHCP had the pleasure of visiting Mulawarman University's Faculty of Fisheries and Marine Science in Samarinda, East Kalimantan.
In recognizing the significance of East Kalimantan as a horseshoe crab habitat, IHCP and Mulawarman University signed an MoU for research collaboration. The MoU was signed by the Faculty Dean, Dr. Ir. Komsanah Sukarti, M.P. and the Project Leader of Indonesia Horseshoe Crab Project.
IHCP also delivered a lecture for the faculty’s marine science students. Through the lecture, we were also able to share some of our research findings from the past 6 months on the field. We hope to connect with even more students, lecturers and universities to further strengthen our collective mission to protect our living fossils.
