Over the last year we have been fundraising to make a Disabled Children's School in Kerobokan, Bali. This unit will specialise in physically disabled children from birth through to 16 years old. We will use conductive education as our main therapy but this will be enhanced with other well respected therapies and education technique
s. To provide a safe, happy, supportive, natural, classroom environment, free of charge, for children with physical disabilities living within the community. To develop the child’s:

What are the aims of the unit? We will cater to all aspects of the child’s well being, incorporating a holistic approach, which encompasses therapy, education, pastoral care, medical support and independence training. There are approximately 60,000 disabled people on our island of Bali
2. Currently there are only 12 schools available - 4 are for deaf children, 4 for blind children, 1 center for the mentally handicapped and 1 is for physically handicapped people.
3. Many of the current facilities are under-funded, under-resourced, use outdated practices, and many are running without professional expertise. The Sunrise Disabled Children's Unit will be the first centre in the most populated area of Bali, the South. What will the center provide ? Center of Conductive Education, free of charge
- To provide a center where children, under 16 years, with physical disabilities can come, to receive education and therapy, to help them to achieve self respect and independence
Professional staff & therapists
The center will work with professional colleagues from a wide range of disciplines, including medical staff, therapists and alternative therapists. Daily program based on sound holistic principles
The two hourly conductive education program will be followed by a session with one of the further therapies offered, i.e. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy or alternative therapy. Why conductive education ? Conductive education is a holistic style of therapy and approaches the needs of the child as one need. It is appropriate for all children with mobility and motor related disabilities. Conductive education uses techniques which incorporate physiotherapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy and education into one program. What therapies will be available? The center will provide the type of therapies that are currently in place internationally: therapies that are recognised as effective and manageable, therapies we can adapt to our current environment while still understanding that these are respected worldwide. The center will provide a training center for Indonesian staff to learn these therapy techniques. How will the center be staffed?
- Run by a qualified conductor and 6 Indonesian staff
- All staff trained in therapy and programming techniques by the conductor, with the aim of becoming trainers themselves as the center develops
The center currently has 7 confirmed volunteers who are therapeutic professionals
What about specialists ? We will invite professionals with therapeutic expertise on a voluntary basis, including homeopaths, naturopaths, speech therapists, physiotherapists, Body Talk practitioners, Rolfing techniques, cranio-sacral therapy, Reiki, nutritional advisors, and play therapists. Encourage interns from training centers around the world, or those practising locally, to volunteer and gain experience. How will the center further help the community?
1. The center will help disabled people to find a working role within the center or the community
2. There are no government schemes to provide help to people with disabilities with a workshop and suitable tools, disabled people who are physically able can be involved in the manufacture of the disability aids.
3. The center would be a distribution post for charitable donations of wheelchairs and other disability equipment - within two years we will have a small, well equipped workshop in which we could replicate and manufacture disability equipment, as the need arises
How will the center be funded ? Sponsorship, charities, fundraising and income from the center (donations from families who can afford it).
