Thrive Conservation

Thrive Conservation We are Thrive Conservation. We are nurturing the future of our planet. WHERE WE GO:

We identify gaps in conservation efforts across Indonesia.

WHAT WE DO:

We support young Indonesians to address overlooked environmental issues on land and in the ocean. These young leaders work together with local communities and decision-makers to solve conservation problems. We connect young conservationists with experts to create networks for knowledge exchange and to design effective action. Supported by mentors, we enable them to find appropriate so

lutions that allow people and nature to thrive. We step into issues or locations that do not have sufficient devoted resources: knowledge, funding and dedicated people. VISION AND PURPOSE

We want to live in a world where anyone can be a conservationist, where people from all backgrounds are empowered to create positive environmental change in their own communities, and where the traditional barriers to a career in this sector are a distant memory. Ultimately, we want to live in a world where people and nature re-connect and thrive together. OUR VALUES:

Thrive Conservation are champions of the underdog. We believe innovation isn’t limited by a person’s background, but we fully recognise their disparity of opportunity. We exist to challenge the status quo of our sector and make conservation more accessible, transparent, and accountable. We see first-hand the breadth of incredible emerging talent which, if not properly supported, is at risk of being lost. Thrive Conservation is founded as a commitment to realising this potential. We will celebrate and encourage innovation from all backgrounds, enabling local people to protect their environment, value their contribution and see a viable future, which can grow from their passion. As we work to realize our goals, we will never lose sight of our core values. WE ARE, AND WILL ALWAYS BE:

1. Compassionate: Our organisational culture and projects are built on foundations of understanding and respect.
2. Creative: we encourage creative problem solving and ensure our teams have the flexibility to experiment and learn from failures.
3. Courageous: we have the strength to stand up for what is right over what is comfortable or easy, and the courage to stay true to our values even in the face of adversity. We will build a foundation for future projects on these pillars, practically and fairly supporting individuals, inspiring their communities and contributing to the global movement towards a healthier environment.

Happy World Manta Day! 🌊✨

Today we celebrate the ocean’s most graceful giants and rally behind this year’s theme: The Power of Protection.

From securing stronger protections to building awareness for these threatened species, every action counts! 💙

At Thrive Conservation and Indonesian Manta Project, here’s how we’ve been making waves — from long-term impact to exciting new updates:

🏝 Over 15 years of manta research in Rote led to our team’s successful ISRA designation of Heliana Island in 2024, putting its global importance on the map.

🤝 We recently partnered with Aqua Expeditions to grow awareness and capacity for manta conservation across Indonesia.

🛰 This year we’re leveling up! We’ll begin satellite tagging manta rays in Rote to track their movements and learn more about local populations (already 47 individuals strong in our database)!

🚨 NEW SPECIES ALERT 🚨

Researchers have just described a brand new species of dwarfgoby — Eviota vader! Discovered in McLaren Fjord in Papua New Guinea 🇵🇬, at just 4 meters depth, this tiny fish (under half an inch long!) has striking dark purplish-black coloration and bright yellow eyes, unlike any of its 130+ relatives.

Named after Darth Vader 🌌⚔️, the black dwarfgoby was spotted perched on coral outcrops in the dramatic volcanic fjords of Tufi. So far, only one individual has been seen, leaving researchers eager to learn more about its range and population.

The discovery was made by Dr. David Greenfield, Dr. Mark Erdmann, and our very own Nesha Ichida from Thrive Conservation.

🇮🇩✨ Yesterday (17 August) was Indonesia’s Independence Day, and today we celebrated it in style with our Bo’a community!

We kicked off with a heartfelt singing of “Indonesia Raya” 🎶, followed by fun games and competitions like the marbles relay, sack race, and tug of war 🏆🎯. The energy was amazing!

The day wrapped up with a spirited beach clean-up challenge 🏝️🧹♻️ — teamwork for both our nation and our environment.

This wonderful event was led by the Boa Rangers — a passionate group of local kids aged 10–16 👧👦, under our Rote Project team’s guidance. These young changemakers are dedicated to learning and caring for the environment, and they truly made the day special. 💚

Recently, our team joined the English Club of Bo’a Village in Rote for a day of mangrove planting along the coast of Fimok.

Not only did we plant 200 mangrove seedlings, we also shared with participants the importance of mangrove ecosystems and how their actions can have a positive impact — fostering a sense of responsibility for the environment! 🌱🌊

Our team came together in Sanur, Bali last week for our inaugural retreat. Over five days, we rejuvenated, reflected, and reconnected with the heart of our mission. 🌴✨

Hear from our Founder and CEO Sarah Lewis:

“At Thrive, we believe the strength of our conservation work depends on the strength of our team. Thrive Conservation was created to be more than just a workplace. We set out to build a culture where people feel safe, connected, and inspired to show up fully.

Our recent team retreat brought us back to that original intention. As a small team spread across Indonesia and beyond, we rarely get the chance to all be in one place. This time together gave us space to reflect, recharge, and reconnect, not just with each other, but with our shared mission and values.

It reminded us that when we lead with authenticity, joy, and trust, we don’t just grow stronger as a team. We grow stronger in our mission to protect nature, together.”

📸 Check out these highlights from the week!
