Some may disagree, but I’m here to share what the island of Bali truly is to me — and why my heart is drawn to supporting the underprivileged.
I don’t see Bali as the poorest place on earth, nor do I claim it to necessarily be the most beautiful. What makes Bali extraordinary besides it’s overwhelming Aussie interest and its proximity to Australia is something far deeper: the sense of calm that settles over you, the warmth and gentleness of the locals, and the rich spiritual culture that seems to breathe life into every moment.
When you step outside the busy tourist hubs — when you wander through the villages, the mountains, and the quiet communities — you discover a different Bali. A Bali that is raw, humble, breathtakingly real. You see how beautiful, how unique, and how profoundly grounding this land and its people are. You’re reminded that material things aren’t what truly matter. Instead, it’s health, happiness, gratitude, and kindness. It’s the way people look out for one another, even when they themselves are struggling.
I’ve learnt more about the hardships faced by many locals — difficulties they rarely speak of, needs that often go unnoticed. And through all of it, their grace, their humility, and where their strength rarely fades. Even in the toughest circumstances, you won’t hear a complaint. Only quiet resilience.
For me, Bali has never been about the tourist hubs. Those places don’t reflect the true heart of the island and so often attracts an unhealthy element.
The real Bali — lives in the people who welcome you, who teach you without ever realising, who show you what it means to be grounded, grateful, and human. Supporting them, learning from them, and walking beside them makes me a better person.
I created Bali Family Projects Ltd Not to only shine a light on Bali, but to shine a light on the people who deserve to be seen anywhere around the world, maybe even our neighbours. Because more people need help — and more people need to understand that behind the beauty of Bali lies a community built on love, humility, and unmatched strength— and are all things we can each learn from.
A very kind Balinese person once told me something that will forever stand with me:
Quote: “We have nothing, but we are everything.”
I carry those words with me every day.
