On 29 September 2026, Pannon Future Forest partners met in Voćin, Croatia, at the local forestry office of Hrvatske šume. Discussions focused on preparations for the November Hackathon, business idea selection and the Mentor Programme.

💡 The Hackathon on 5 November will welcome individuals and teams with new forest-related business ideas. Design thinking, business model development and mentoring from project partners will help participants explore customer needs and sharpen the value of their solutions.

📅 Business idea questionnaires must be submitted by 15 October. Partners plan to select three to five ideas per country.

The meeting also addressed the project’s Valorisation Strategy and preparations for its knowledge-sharing platform. The afternoon programme included visits to the Geo Info Centre at Park prirode Papuk - Papuk UNESCO Global Geopark and a local entrepreneur.

🍽️🌍 International Day of Awareness of Food Loss and Waste — September 29 🌍🍽️

Nearly one-third of all food produced globally is lost or wasted, while millions of people face food insecurity and food systems continue to drive climate change. Food loss and waste mean wasted water, energy, land, and labor — and unnecessary emissions added to the atmosphere.

Reducing food waste is one of the simplest, most immediate climate actions we can take. It saves resources, lowers emissions, and respects the value of food beyond consumption.

At Climate Bridges, we focus on practical solutions that connect climate action to everyday choices — including how food is produced, distributed, and consumed.

🌱 What you can do:
✓ Plan meals and shop with intention.
✓ Store food properly and understand expiration labels.
✓ Use leftovers creatively instead of throwing them away.
✓ Support local and sustainable food systems.

💬 Question for you:
What’s one habit you’ve changed to reduce food waste at home?

🌳 New ideas and new connections at the third Pannon Future Forest knowledge-building workshop
On 11 August, we held the third online Pannon Future Forest knowledge-building workshop, once again exploring one central question: how can forests and other natural assets become the basis for new and sustainable economic opportunities?
💡 Several concrete directions for further development emerged from the discussion:
🌲 AI- and drone-based forest monitoring, including the identification of invasive species
🌲 multispectral drone technology for forest health monitoring
🌲 a healing and wellness forest concept combining forest bathing, recreation and wellbeing services
🌲 scientific measurement of the health effects of forest environments
🌲 involving university students in developing real-life project ideas
🌲 using university, professional and chamber networks to reach new innovators and entrepreneurs.
We were particularly pleased to see participants with closely related ideas connect during the workshop itself, opening the possibility of jointly developing a healing and wellness forest concept. 🌿
And the process continues. Pannon Future Forest is building a mentor network and an online knowledge hub, while we continue to look for promising ideas, experts and businesses connected to the forest-based green economy.
➡️ Next step: developing the ideas further and preparing for the planned hackathon in Osijek.

🌲 Pannon Future Forest featured in a new article

We are pleased to share a new article presenting the Pannon Future Forest project and its work to unlock new green-economy opportunities linked to forests and other nature-based resources in the Hungarian–Croatian–Slovenian border region.

The article explores how forests can be understood not only as sources of timber, but as multifunctional natural assets providing ecosystem services and creating opportunities in areas such as climate-tech, forest-based bioeconomy, sustainable forest and land management, carbon and biodiversity markets, nature-based solutions, wellbeing and regenerative tourism.

🎙️ Judit Kis-Pongrácz, Project Manager of Pannon Future Forest, also introduces the project’s mission, the role of catalyst organisations, the future Mentor Network and Knowledge Hub, and the business opportunities identified through our Benchmark Study.

The article also highlights our publication “Forests as the Economy of the Future – Best Practices and Business Opportunities in the Forest-Based Bioeconomy”, which translates the findings of the Benchmark Study into accessible examples and inspiration for businesses, support organisations and other stakeholders.
