REHEATEAST on the PLANET EXPO, Hungary

The five-day Planet Expo (February 25 – March 1) is one of Central Europe’s largest forums dedicated to sustainability solutions – and a true business catalyst.
The event brings together Hungarian companies, startups, and institutions to showcase how sustainability is becoming a real economic opportunity and a smart business strategy. With 100 Hungarian exhibitors presenting innovative solutions, Planet Expo highlights how green transition efforts are transforming industries and creating tangible market value.

Among the exhibitors, the Nemzeti Energetikai Ügynökség (NEÜ) will also be present, promoting the REHEATEAST project and sharing its latest achievements and results. The project fit well into the objective of the EXPO, demonstrating how advanced district heating solutions can contribute to a more sustainable, energy-efficient future in the region.

We look forward to connecting with partners, innovators, and stakeholders who believe that sustainability is not only a responsibility – but also a powerful driver of growth and competitiveness.

📝 ♨️ Why District Heating Must Transform Faster in Central and Eastern Europe – Insights from the First REHEATEAST Policy Brief
The REHEATEAST project has published its first Policy Brief, highlighting why district heating transformation must accelerate across Central and Eastern Europe — and how policymakers can make it happen.
🌍 Heating accounts for over 40% of building energy use in Europe, yet many district heating systems remain fossil-based. This creates risks for affordability, energy security and climate goals. Our latest evidence shows that modernising district heating is not optional — it is essential.
🤝 Based on consultations with policymakers, regulators and sector experts, the brief confirms strong consensus: district heating will remain a cornerstone of the clean energy transition.
At the same time, regulatory gaps, slow permitting, financing barriers and weak coordination continue to slow progress.
🌱 With EU initiatives like Fit for 55 and REPowerEU providing momentum, the Policy Brief calls for clear national strategies, mandatory local heat planning, stable tariff frameworks and stronger municipal leadership.
Read the full Policy Brief to explore key findings and concrete policy actions that can deliver affordable, resilient and climate-proof heating systems across the region: Link is in the comment section.

The REHEATEAST, Heat 35, GREET CE and GREET GEO projects jointly hosted a webinar highlighting breakthrough technologies that can accelerate the decarbonisation of district heating and urban energy systems across Central and Southern Europe.
With district heating playing a key role in the region, the event focused on innovative solutions that turn urban waste streams into valuable energy sources. Three standout Central European companies presented technologies with strong potential for environmental and financial impact:
♨️ Thermowatt – introduced by Pál Kiss
A patented wastewater heat recovery solution (protected in 37 countries) delivering over 10 MW capacity in cities of 100,000+ inhabitants. A proven, cost-effective way to produce clean heating and cooling.
🟢 eChemicles – presented by Balázs Hepp
A scalable electrochemical technology that converts CO₂ into e-chemicals using renewable electricity. Winner of the EIT Manufacturing Day BoostUp! East 2025 competition, and one of the EC’s Innovation Radar finalists in the Climate, Energy & Mobility category.
🔋 Heatventors – presented by Ferenc Sztruhala

A rapidly growing thermal storage startup supported by EIT InnoEnergy, recently closing a €4 million investment round to scale its innovative heat storage solutions.

The webinar demonstrated how industrial innovation, EU cooperation and strong regional partnerships can unlock sustainable, resilient and future-proof heating systems.

A big thank you to all speakers, participants, and partner organisations for moving the conversation forward on clean and efficient energy for Europe’s cities.
