New REHEATEAST Publication Showcases Pathways to Decarbonising District Heating in the Eastern Danube Region Programme

The REHEATEAST project has published its new overview brochure, presenting the project's key achievements, innovative pilot actions, and practical solutions for accelerating the decarbonisation of district heating systems across the Eastern Danube Region. The publication highlights how local partnerships, technological innovation, and stakeholder engagement can work together to reduce fossil energy demand while increasing the use of renewable energy and waste heat.

The 16-page publication introduces the project's integrated approach to modernising district heating through both supply-side and demand-side interventions. It also presents major project deliverables, including the DHC Explorer platform, stakeholder analyses, policy recommendations, online training materials, and eleven pilot actions implemented across eight countries.

The publication illustrates how REHEATEAST is creating transferable models that help municipalities, district heating utilities, research organisations, and policymakers develop more efficient, resilient, and climate-friendly heating systems throughout the Danube Region.

The brochure is now available as part of the REHEATEAST dissemination materials and provides a comprehensive overview of the project's results and long-term impact.

📝 Stronger Stakeholder Cooperation is Key for the Future of District Heating and Cooling – Insights from the Second REHEATEAST Policy Brief
The REHEATEAST project has published its second Policy Brief, highlighting why stronger governance, coordination and stakeholder cooperation are essential for accelerating the transition of DHC systems across the Eastern Danube Region.
🌍 Rising energy costs, ageing infrastructure and climate goals are increasing pressure to modernise heating systems and reduce fossil fuel dependence. Our latest findings show that successful transition depends not only on investment and technology — but also on effective cooperation between governments, municipalities, utilities, investors and consumers.
🤝 Based on consultations across eight countries, the Policy Brief identifies key barriers slowing progress, including fragmented policies, regulatory uncertainty, weak coordination and limited municipal capacities.
🏙️ The findings also underline the central role of municipalities in energy planning and stakeholder coordination, while stressing the need for stronger consumer involvement, permanent dialogue platforms and better institutional support.
🌱 To accelerate implementation, the Policy Brief calls for coherent long-term DHC strategies, stronger coordination between energy and spatial planning policies, simplified permitting procedures, stable financing conditions and faster deployment of renewable and waste heat solutions.

Speakers shared practical experiences, innovative solutions, and policy perspectives that can support the energy transition of cities and communities throughout the region.

The second day of the REHEATEAST Final Conference focused on evaluating the project results, discussing policy uptake opportunities, and sharing lessons learned from pilot actions implemented across the Danube Region.

Partners and stakeholders reviewed the project’s key achievements in renewable district heating and cooling (DHC), geothermal integration, and sustainable energy planning, while also addressing future challenges and opportunities for regional cooperation.

The professional discussions highlighted the importance of coordinated policy approaches, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge exchange in supporting the transition toward climate-neutral and energy-efficient urban systems.

We would like to thank all partners, speakers, and participants for their valuable contributions and active cooperation throughout the conference!

While the conference is closing, the final phase and official closure of the REHEATEAST project are still ahead of us.

♨️ The REHEATEAST Final Conference Has Officially Begun 🌍

The first day focused on the current European and regional perspectives of renewable District Heating and Cooling (DHC) systems, as well as the strategic challenges of the sustainable energy transition in the Danube Region.

The event was opened by László Őri dr, President of Pannon Európai Területi Társulás, and Horst Schindler, Priority Officer of the Danube Region Programme Joint Secretariat, who emphasized the strategic importance of transnational cooperation in achieving energy efficiency and decarbonization objectives across the region.

During the keynote sessions, participants gained valuable insights into:
🔹 current trends in European renewable DHC systems,
🔹 the potential of waste heat recovery and utilization in the Danube Region,
🔹 Hungary’s geothermal potential and its integration into district heating systems,
🔹 as well as the role of energy-efficient urban development and building stock renovation in creating climate-neutral cities.

The professional programme placed particular emphasis on geothermal energy integration, NetZero urban models, intelligent energy management systems, and the practical experiences of innovative EU-funded energy projects.

The presentations and expert discussions highlighted that renewable-based district heating systems play a key role in enhancing energy security, strengthening energy independence, and supporting the long-term climate objectives of the region.

📍 The conference will continue tomorrow with additional thematic sessions, project presentations, and international knowledge exchange.
